Beans are healthy food for humans; they offer high levels of protein, fiber, B vitamins, iron, potassium and more! They’re popular worldwide and can be cooked in a variety of ways.

Can my dog eat beans? The short answer is yes, dogs can eat most beans. The safest beans for your dog include, green beans (string beans), kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, black beans and lima beans (also called butter beans). However, the following beans can be toxic to your dog: broad beans (fava beans), baked or refried beans or canned beans. Beans should be cooked, so they’re easily digestible for your dog and can be used in the main meal or even as a healthy snack.

Things to keep in mind: beans should always be cooked and be prepared—they may cause your dog to produce more gas! So, serve them in moderation to avoid this problem. If your dog ate only beans, he would end up unhealthy. So be sure to mix beans with other safe foods to give your pet a balanced diet. What about puppies? Puppies can eat beans, but if a puppy ate beans all the time, he’d not grow and develop properly. Puppies need a wide variety of nutrients to grow into healthy adults.
