What’s better than a chilled glass of orange juice in the morning? The taste of orange juice makes you come awake and fills you with sunshine for the day to come! But what happens if a dog drinks orange juice?

Has your dog drunk orange juice? Are you worried the orange juice will make your dog sick? If so, then you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog drinks something like this.

We’ve put together some information about orange juice and whether it can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!

What is Orange Juice?

Orange juice is a liquid that comes from squeezing oranges. Orange juice comes in a wide variety of colors and tastes, depending on the oranges used to produce the liquid. For instance, blood oranges produce an orange-red juice, while navel oranges produce a more yellow-orange juice.

Along with the different colors, different types of orange juice also tastes a bit different from others.

Orange juice has a very interesting history. Back in WWII, the government looked for a food that would keep soldiers healthy and prevent scurvy. After the soldiers rejected their lemon crystals (because of the crystals’ horrible taste!), the government then turned to orange juice.

Government scientists worked with the Florida Department of Citrus to create juice that tasted better than what was on the market at the time. They finally came up with frozen concentrated orange juice. However, the product wasn’t available until about three years after the war ended! Even so, orange juice became more widely affordable and was promoted as a way to get plenty of vitamin C.

But what happens when a dog drinks orange juice? Can the juice make him sick?

Orange Juice & Dogs

Oranges are not toxic to dogs; however, dogs should not eat too many. Oranges contain acid, which can be harmful to a dog’s sensitive stomach.

If a dog drinks too much orange juice, he may develop GI problems. The fruit also contains high levels of sugar that can be harmful to dogs.

If your dog has had a lick or two of orange juice, chances are he will be OK. However, larger amounts of juice could make him sick. Orange juice is also not good for dogs who have sensitive stomachs and other GI problems.

Symptoms of Orange Juice Ingestion in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has drunk too much orange juice:

If your dog has drunk a large amount of orange juice, it’s best to call the vet. It’s easy for a dog to become dehydrated if they suffer from lengthy bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. If a dog’s GI symptoms last longer than 24 hours, then it’s possible he may need to see the vet.

And if the dog has diabetes and experiences symptoms, call the vet immediately. This can be a very dangerous situation.

As you can see, orange juice is not toxic to dogs; however, it can cause a lot of health problems for them. So, it’s best to make sure your orange juice is where your canine companion can’t reach it. You will both be happier for it!
