Does your dog like to get into things? Has he ever tried to get into your medications? If so, this is a common problem. Dogs can be very smart when it comes to getting something they really want! Even medications that we believe are out of their reach. When that happens, it can be scary.

Should You Leave Your Dog In The Dark?

We’ve put together some information about Zetia and whether or not it can make your dog sick. Let’s get started!

What is Zetia?

Zetia is a prescription medication that’s used to treat high cholesterol and reduce cholesterol in humans. It’s classified as a lipid-lowering agent, 2-Azetidinones. This medication works to lower the lipid in the intestines, where these are absorbed into the body. Your doctor may have also referred to Zetia as a statin.

Zetia is given to people who may be prone to or have a history of atherosclerotic vascular disease (heart disease). The medication may be prescribed along with a specific diet to help lower cholesterol to safer levels.

While this medication is safe for humans, can Zetia make your dog sick?

Zetia & Dogs

The good news is that most statins, including Zetia, are not considered toxic to dogs. However, depending on the amount your dog has eaten, it’s possible he could develop some digestive issues. These symptoms can include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

In most cases, these GI symptoms may last between 24-48 hours. If your dog’s symptoms last longer than this, then it’s time to call the vet. The issue is that diarrhea and vomiting that lasts longer can lead to dehydration.

Another problem, though rare, is that some dogs could be allergic to Zetia. In this case, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • Red, itchy, irritated skin
  • Swollen mouth/face
  • Excessive scratching
  • Hives
  • Breathing difficulties

If your dog develops these symptoms, then it’s time to call the vet. Your dog could develop a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening.

Again, the good news is that your dog should be OK, even if he’s ingested several Zetia pills. Just be sure to call the vet if he has diarrhea/vomiting that lasts too long and/or if your dog develops signs of an allergic reaction. Otherwise, he should be feeling much better in a day or so!
