What are the travel policies for the emotional support animal (ESA) owners?

WestJet is updating their policy on the carriage of emotional support animals on board planes and to better meet the requirements of the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) in order to ensure the safety and comfort of our passengers. WestJet complies with U.S. Department of Transportation regulations regarding service dogs as it is needed for the safety and comfort of the other passengers.

WestJet allows service animals to work for disabled passengers. Service animals that work with disabled passengers are specially bred and can be retrained to do tasks that help them get around the airport. Service animals are required to be properly cared for on all flights on which they will travel – whether it is on a regular basis or on a cruise – by an organization or person who specializes in helping people with disabilities to become accustomed to using these dogs.

Those with disabilities cannot require that an airline allow their service animals to travel in a plane cabin; however, their policies will still have to treat a psychiatric service dog as if it were a service dog. Despite the change, airlines still have to accept psychiatric service animals that are trained to help people with mental illness, just like they do with service dogs that are trained to help others.

What types of animals are allowed to travel with WestJet Airlines?

WestJet only allows dogs as service animals for the disabled people. Service animals that are going to travel with their owners must have been trained to do work or perform tasks for their owners. Service animals that are going to travel domestically, internationally and Caribbean flights must be trained by an organization or by an individual who is specializing in service dogs.
