All dogs will chew at some point, especially when they’re puppies. Chewing is a way puppies and young dogs learn about their world. What are some other causes of chewing, especially bedding and plush toys?
- Teething: is a big part of puppyhood! Between the ages of 4-6 months of age, puppies will chew on anything and everything they can sink their teeth in to. Teething relieves painful gums where teeth are coming through. Human babies do the same thing—have you ever noticed your baby’s crib has tooth marks on it? This is the reason—teething!
- Boredom: some dogs become bored, especially if left alone all day and/or are locked in a crate or one area for most of the day. They will do anything to relieve their boredom, including chewing up their fluffy, comfy beds.
- Stress/Anxiety: other dogs tend to chew when feeling anxious or stressed. Again, this could be caused by being alone all day, or being locked in a crate/kennel or room most of the day alone. Another cause can be a past trauma (abandonment, abuse, etc.), which might be the source of stress or anxiety in a dog. Chewing helps relieve these anxious feelings and soothes the dog’s nerves.
