Best Indestructible Dog Beds – 100% Chew Proof!

Do you have a dog who chews up his dog bed…every, single time? You’ve tried to curb his chewing and he just can’t seem to stop? Does he love to tear the fabric and remove the stuffing? Does he drag his bed around, leaving a trail of fabric and stuffing behind? Does this sound familiar?

Don’t despair! We’ve done the research to help you find the best indestructible dog beds around. Hopefully one of these will be a good fit for your happily-gnawing dog! One note—you have to realize that there’s no such thing as a dog bed that’s completely indestructible. Some dogs are determined and will chew up anything! Before we look at some unchewable beds, we’ll take a look at why some dogs just can’t resist chewing up their beds.

What to Look for in an Indestructible Dog Bed

So, just what features should you look for in an unchewable dog bed? Let’s take a look!

1,000 + Ballistic Nylon: this is a fabric often used for backpacks, but it also makes a great material for dog beds. It’s not “indestructible,” but will be difficult for most dogs to chew through. Your dog will probably become bored with trying to tear through this fabric before he even makes a hole.

Construction: should include double-stitched seams, multiple layers of fabric (so your dog has to work through the layers before getting to the fun stuffing), includes non-chewable surfaces (such as a metal frame, etc.), zippers should be hidden or covered (making it harder for your dog to find and chew them out), a money-back-guarantee if your dog manages to chew threw the bed.

Dog beds with these features can still be destroyed by the most determined dog; however, if you look for these types of features, you’ll have a bed that will at least be more a challenge than your pet’s previous beds. Now, let’s find the best unchewable dog bed for your fur baby!

Top 5 Chew Proof Dog Beds

1. Coolaroo Elevated Pet Bed with Knitted Fabric

Check Price on Amazon

The Coolaroo is a great bed for chewers. The frame’s made of sturdy, lightweight powder-coated steel that’s not chewable. The frame supports a breathable high-density polyethylene fabric that allows air flow through to help keep your pet cool. The bed keeps the fabric and your pet elevated more than 7 inches off the ground. In addition, the fabric provides support for pressure points and joints.

This dog bed is easy to wash and is resistant to fleas, mites, mold and mildew. It’s portable and can be used inside or outside. This pet bed comes in small, medium and large sizes so you’ll find the bed that’s just right for your pup. One note: a dog that’s determined to chew could possibly tear up the fabric; however, it would be difficult for most dogs to chew it up. The metal frame is unchewable. Overall, this is a great chew proof dog bed.

No sewing involved! This DIY pet ped is a little less expensive than some of the other dog beds.

These are some options you might consider when looking for an unchewable bed for your fur baby. Be sure to keep in mind that no bed is completely indestructible. Aggressive chewers can chew through almost anything if they’re determined. Even so, we hope this guide will help you find the best, most comfortable bed for your pup!

Why Do Dogs Chew Their Beds?

All dogs will chew at some point, especially when they’re puppies. Chewing is a way puppies and young dogs learn about their world. What are some other causes of chewing, especially bedding and plush toys?

  • Teething: is a big part of puppyhood! Between the ages of 4-6 months of age, puppies will chew on anything and everything they can sink their teeth in to. Teething relieves painful gums where teeth are coming through. Human babies do the same thing—have you ever noticed your baby’s crib has tooth marks on it? This is the reason—teething!
  • Boredom: some dogs become bored, especially if left alone all day and/or are locked in a crate or one area for most of the day. They will do anything to relieve their boredom, including chewing up their fluffy, comfy beds.
  • Stress/Anxiety: other dogs tend to chew when feeling anxious or stressed. Again, this could be caused by being alone all day, or being locked in a crate/kennel or room most of the day alone. Another cause can be a past trauma (abandonment, abuse, etc.), which might be the source of stress or anxiety in a dog. Chewing helps relieve these anxious feelings and soothes the dog’s nerves.
  • Compulsive chewing disorder: yes, dogs can have compulsive disorders, too, including compulsive chewing disorders. Dogs with this condition just have to chew…they are obsessed with chewing and will chew their beds to pieces, along with a few other things, too.
  • Medical conditions: there are some medical conditions that could be making your dog chew up his bed and other things. Gastrointestinal conditions, maybe he’s very hungry (can be caused by diabetes, inflammatory bowel disorders, intestinal cancer, and hyperthyroidism, to name a few), etc.
  • Practicing predator instincts: your dog could also be practicing his predator instincts. When a dog chews up anything—including his bed—he will take a specific stance. Most often you’ll find his front feet on the thing being chewed, he’ll then reach down with his teeth to grab onto the chewy delight. Using his neck, your dog will then pull his head back, tearing the fabric (or whatever). This is how wild canines (including wolves, coyotes, wild dogs) tear into their prey. Your dog could have a strong predator instinct and just be practicing his technique…or at least, that’s what he’d like you to think.
  • Nesting behavior: some dogs love to build a comfy nest. They’ll twist and turn their bed, mangle it into the most comfortable position and may also chew it up in an attempt to make it fit their needs.
  • Just for fun: this may go along with boredom, but some dogs chew just for fun. Watch your dog chew up his bed, a pillow, or a stuffed animal (or your favorite pillow!). He’s in heaven! What’s not to enjoy when there’s soft fabric and stuffing flying around? The sound of ripping can be satisfying, too!

There are several reasons your fur baby could be chewing up his bed (and other things!). If you have a new puppy, chances are he’s only teething and exploring his new world. He’ll eventually outgrow this behavior. If your dog’s bored, you might consider enrolling him in a doggie day care program where he’ll be able to socialize and exercise during the day. When you both get home, he’ll probably be too tired to want to chew.

For a dog who seems to compulsively chew, it might be a good idea to visit the vet. Your dog may have an underlying disorder, stress/anxiety or a medical condition that causes him to chew. It’s a good to get him examined just to make sure there’s nothing serious causing this destructive behavior.

I like this Orthopedic 4” Dog Crate Pad by Big Barker. It is almost 100 percent chew proof and my dog has noticed it’s not budging and has given up trying to chew on it.

Gosh. I’ve bought lots of different beds but my dog has really not been friendly to it. I always come home to fabrics falling apart and the bed in tatters. I’m already frustrated with the whole thing.

oops. I understand how it feels. I’ll recommend Orthopedic 4” Dog Crate Pad. It’s almost indestructible, waterproof and easy to wash. I doubt your dog will succeed in destroying it.
