Why a Dog’s Name is Important

For one thing, it’s your dog’s name. This is what you’ll use to give your dog cues, show him/her love, and more. Your dog’s name is what will grab his attention when you’re out on a hike, or at the dog park. It is his identifier, too.

Choosing the right moniker for your dog can be challenging. It takes a little time and inspiration to come up with a name that fits. To help you out, here are some tips for choosing a dog’s name:

Choose a unique name: you want to avoid choosing a name that is extremely popular. The reason is because so many other dogs will already have the same name. What happens if you’re in an area with a lot of other dogs, such as a dog park, and you call that popular name? You’ll have several dogs showing up! Your own dog may not even pay attention! So, choose a unique name instead of one that’s popular.

Choose a name that doesn’t sound like a cue: during training, you’ll use your dog’s name frequently. It will be the sound that gets his attention. He’ll know that you’re talking to him and that you expect something from him. However, if you choose a name such as “Clown,” while it may be fitting, the name sounds too much like “down.” This could be confusing to the dog. He won’t know if you’re calling him or giving him a cue!

Avoid rhyming or similar names: another tip is to consider the names of other people and pets in your ho me. It’s best not to choose a dog name that sounds similar to these names. It can be cute to  call “Mo, Bo, and Jo,” but if these are three dogs, they won’t know which of them you’re calling. So, you’ll have three dogs showing up instead of the one you want! That can be cute, but it’s very confusing for the dogs. It’s also confusing for other people and pets if the dog has a similar name to their own. So, choose a name that’s entirely different from anyone else’s in your home.

Choose a name you like: dogs are sensitive beings and will know if you give them a name that has negative meanings. They can sense this when you call or say the name. So, choose a name that is positive to you, and it will be positive to your fur baby, too!
