Are you the new proud parent of a Shih Tzu? Congratulations! We’re happy and excited for you both! It’s so exciting to bring a dog home after you’ve adopted them! Nothing could be better!

Now that you have a new dog, you’ll need to find a name for them! However, we understand it can be difficult to find that special name for your new fur baby. If you’ve run out of inspiration, then you’ve come to the right place!

We’ve searched through names across the Internet, choosing only those that might be a great fit for a Shih Tzu. Our list of dog names is coming up, but first, let’s take a look at the Shih Tzu dog breed.

What is a Shih Tzu?

Shih Tzus are classified as a small dog breed. While they are small, they’re strong for a little dog! And what about those deep brown eyes? Who can resist them?

They originated in China, where they were bred for life with Chinese emperors. By the way, Shih Tzu means “lion dog.” They do look a little bit like a lion! Shih Tzus were long the pampered pets of emperors and could not be owned by anyone, not of the nobility.

Remember, these dogs were not bred to hunt or do guard duty. They were bred to be companion dogs. And that’s still their major function today!

Shih Tzus have an average weight of 9-16 pounds and stand between 9-11 inches. Even though they’re small, they are strong, as we noted above. And they’re pretty. These dogs are known for their beautiful, silky coats. They also have floppy ears that are covered in the same long fur and have a very furry tail that curls over the back.

This breed’s coat can come in many colors, but white and grey are the most common color for Shih Tzus. You may see dogs with colors such as red & white, gold & white, black & white, solid black, blue & white, and more. Their long, beautiful coats require daily brushing to keep out the snarls and mats. And they require regular grooming, as their hair grows very fast.

These small dogs are great apartment dwellers, yet they also do well in larger homes and even farms. However, these dogs cannot be outside dogs. This is because of their size, their need to be near their humans, and because they’re sensitive to the heat.

Shih Tzus are known to be intelligent, friendly, sweet, playful, and friendly. And they’re alert and curious. They also do well around other dogs and pets.

However, they must be properly socialized and trained to avoid some negative aspects of their personality taking over. These include a tendency to bark a lot, they can be difficult to potty train, and they need plenty of attention from their pet parents and family.

Another thing to keep in mind about these small dogs is that they can be easily injured due to their small, fragile size.

Shih Tzus can suffer from certain medical conditions including dental problems, bacterial and viral infections, parasites, obesity, liver problems, bone and joint issues, eye problems, kidney disease, Cushing’s, cancer, allergies, and more.

Even so, Shih Tzus make wonderful companions, as you’ve probably found out with your adopted dog!

OK! Now we’re ready to get started with a list of names that might be a great fit for your canine companion!
