Dogs love to eat all kinds of things, such as things that have been dead for days (or months!), old food out of the garbage, and more. And if a dog finds frying oil, he will go after it in a heartbeat! But can frying oil make a dog sick?
Has your dog drunk frying oil? Are you worried the frying oil will make your dog sick? If so, then you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog drinks something like this.
In this article, we’ll take a look at frying oil and whether it can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!
What is Frying Oil?
Frying oil can refer to any type of oil used to sauté, panfry, or deep fry. What’s more, frying oil is a type of oil that can withstand temperatures between 375 F to 390 F (190 C to 200 C) without smoking. There are even frying oils that can be heated at even higher temperatures!
Oil that’s used for deep frying may be reused; however, oil used for panfrying and sauteing may be cooled and discarded after use. The oil is discarded because it tends to take on the flavor of the food that was cooked in the oil. On the other hand, the oil used for deep frying usually doesn’t take on the flavor of the food that’s cooked in it. For this reason, the oil may be reused.
When discarding frying oil, some people may run the oil down the drain. They believe it’s OK to do this if they’ve filled the pan with plenty of hot water and dish soap. However, that’s not the best way to get rid of used frying oil. Throwing out oil in this way may cause plumbing and other problems.
Instead, it’s recommended to put the used oil into a jar or another container and then let it harden in the fridge. Once the oil has hardened, then it’s OK to throw it in the recycling bin. However, some people may just throw the oil in the wastebasket. Doing so is a sure way to attract your dog to the frying oil!
Can frying oil make a dog sick?
The good news is that frying oil usually isn’t toxic to dogs. If your dog has one or two licks of oil, chances are he will be just fine.
However, if your dog wolfs down a bunch of frying oil, then he could become very sick. The danger with frying oil in large amounts is that it can cause pancreatitis in dogs.
