Should You Leave Your Dog In The Dark?

Italian red onions, also called Tropea onions, are popular in Italian cooking. They originate near the city of Tropea, Italy, where you can buy them fresh from the farmers during their harvest time in May-June. Italian red onions have a sweeter taste and are juicier than other types of onions. Some people even make jam with Tropea onions. They’re also popular in salads, sauces, roasted/grilled and more.

Can my dog eat Italian red onions? Can my puppy eat Italian red onions? No, onions—all types—are not recommended for dogs or puppies. Onions can be toxic to dogs due to two substances they contain: thiosulfate and organosulfur. All parts of the onion are toxic to dogs, including the stem, juice, leaves and flesh. All forms are toxic, too, such as dried/powdered onions. What happens if my dog ate onions? If your dog or puppy eats a small slice of onion, he’ll more than likely be OK. But if he eats even a quarter of an onion, he could become quite sick. He could develop a form of anemia called Heinz body anemia or could develop onion toxicity. If your dog eats part of an onion or other food containing a lot of onion, be sure to contact your veterinarian and get an appointment for your dog to see them right away.

All forms, parts and types of onions are unhealthy for dogs of any breed or age. Most times I wonder why dog owners could come out to comfortably say they feed their dog onions. Even though the dog may not react to it, be prepared for something in the future because onions are definitely toxic for dogs.

Good point. I was once discussing with someone I met at the line in a pet grocery store and she was telling me how her dogs love onions in their foods. I had to stop myself from pulling a disgusted face and even after I spent minutes explaining to her how unhealthy it is, she was not even interested in what I had to say. She kept insisting she’ll only listen if her vet doctor said it’s harmful. I guess not everyone understands what they are doing to their dogs by feeding them onions of any kind.

Thank God I found this. My puppy just chewed some red onions off my plate of leftover and it alarmed me when I saw him. I would contact the veterinarian soon. Thank you so much for your efforts on this site. You are really helping lots of us.

Thanks for this. You guys are really doing great. From this site I’ve learned a lot about dog diet and most especially, I have stopped feeding them onions. I used to feed that to my dogs some time ago without knowing it could be harmful to her.
