Has your dog licked a bar of soap? Are you worried the bar of soap could make your dog sick? If so, then you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog does something like this.

In this article, we’ll take a look at bar soap and whether or not it can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!

What is Bar Soap?

Bar soap is nothing more than soap in bar form! Some types of bar soap may be used for cleaning our bodies, while other types of bar soap are used for laundry and cleaning.

Bar soaps are made with surfactants, which are what causes the suds when using this type of soap. The surfactants work to remove germs, dirt, and more from the skin and other surfaces. What’s more, most soap of this kind is made with non-toxic ingredients.

But can bar soap make a dog sick?

Bar Soap & Dogs

The good news is that bars soaps are generally not toxic to dogs. So, if your dog only licks the soap, the chances are he will not get sick.

However, eating the soap is quite another matter. Even though the soap isn’t made with toxic ingredients, it can still make a dog sick. The most common problem is vomiting and diarrhea.

If the vomiting and diarrhea last longer than 24 hours, then it’s best to call the vet. The concern here is that your fur baby could become dehydrated. When this happens, the vet will treat your canine companion with IV fluids, along with medications to stop the digestive tract issues.

If a soap contains other ingredients, it is possible they could cause chemical burns to a dog’s mouth and throat. In that case, you would need to get your dog to the vet for treatment.

Just to recap, if your dog licks a bar of soap, chances are he will be just fine! Just watch for any symptoms that are concerning, such as continuous vomiting and diarrhea. These are issues that mean it’s time to call the vet.
