What is Sprite?

Sprite is a clear lemon-lime flavored soft drink made by the Coca-Cola Company. The drink was first developed in West Germany in 1959 and was then introduced in the US in 1961. Over the years, Spite also included other flavors.

Sprite contains the following ingredients:

  • Carbonated water
  • Sugar
  • Citric acid
  • Sweeteners
  • Acidity regulator
  • Natural lemon & lime flavorings

Sprite can be enjoyed as a cool drink; however, it’s also given to people who have digestive tract issues.

But what happens if a dog drinks Sprite?

Sprite & Dogs

While Sprite is safe for humans, it’s not good for dogs. The problems are the amount of sugar the drink contains, as well as the lemon & lime flavorings. Sugar is very bad for dogs. Too much can cause health issues such as weight gain, obesity, diabetes, tooth decay, and more.

In addition, lemons and limes are toxic to dogs. The amount of lemon & lime in Sprite is probably not enough to make a dog sick. However, these ingredients are toxic to dogs.

Symptoms of Sprite Toxicity in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has drunk Sprite:

  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting

If you notice these symptoms in your dog, then it’s a good idea to call the vet. They will let you know if it’s OK to monitor your dog’s symptoms or if your fur baby needs to see the vet right now.

The vet may have you monitor your dog’s symptoms. In that case, watch for diarrhea and vomiting that become worse or last longer than 24 hours. And be sure to call the vet for any symptoms that worsen or become more concerning.

The good news is that most dogs will make a full recovery after drinking Sprite! Once your dog has recovered, be sure to keep Sprite and other sodas out of your dog’s reach. Prevention is the best medicine!
