What is Lysol?

Lysol is a brand of cleaning and disinfecting product popular in the US. The product is produced by Reckitt, which also sells similar products in the EU. Lysol is a liquid that can safely be used on hard and soft surfaces, handwashing, and more. The active ingredient in this cleaning product is benzalkonium chloride.

This popular cleaning product first debuted back in 1889 when it was developed to help end a cholera epidemic in Germany. Later, Lysol was advertised as a disinfectant that could kill the virus caused by the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918. The product could be safely used in sick rooms, to clean everything that came into contact with the ill person, and more.

In the 21st century, Lysol continues to be one of the most popular disinfectants in the US. It’s advertised to kill up to 99.99% of viruses and bacteria, which has made the product popular during the Covid-19 pandemic.

But what happens if a dog drinks Lysol? Will Lysol make a dog sick?

Lysol & Dogs

Unfortunately, Lysol’s ingredients are toxic to dogs. The disinfectant can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin.

Symptoms of Lysol Toxicity in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has drunk Lysol:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Hypothermia
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Skin irritation
  • Depression (of the central nervous system)

If you notice these symptoms in your dog, then call the vet immediately. This is a medical emergency.

Let the vet know about when your dog drank the Lysol and how much of the product he had.

As with other household chemicals, accidents will happen. However, it’s always best to keep Lysol and other chemicals where your dog can’t access them. And if you do use Lysol to clean, put your dog in another room until the items or surfaces cleaned with this product have dried.

You know the old saying—prevention is always the best medicine!
