Do you enjoy spicy foods? Who doesn’t? They have so much flavor and heat when you eat them! But what happens if a dog eats spicy food? It can happen that your fur baby is watching every morsel you eat. If there are leftovers in the trash, he’ll find and eat them. But is spicy food safe for dogs?

Has your dog eaten spicy food? Are you worried that spicy food will make your dog sick? If so, you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog eats something like this.

We’ve put together some information about spicy food and whether it can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!

It is strongly recommended to contact a Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian.

What is Spicy Food?

Spicy foods are those that are made with hot-tasting spices. These can include peppers, garlic, curry, cayenne, tabasco sauce, and more. The foods made with these spices can have a hot taste. And after you swallow the food, you may feel warmth or heat going all the way down to your stomach.

Some people love very spicy food, while others can’t stand it. But what about dogs?

Spicy Food & Dogs

Dogs and spicy food don’t go together that well. Even mild peppers could be enough to make a dog sick. Dogs are not able to truly taste the spiciness in a dish; however, the spices can cause digestive issues in dogs. They’re especially bad for dogs that have very sensitive stomachs.

Spicy food can even set off a life-threatening condition called pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the dog’s pancreas.

Symptoms of Spicy Food Ingestion in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog eats spicy food:

If your dog shows any of these symptoms, call the vet right away. This may be an emergency.

Treatment of Spicy Food Ingestion in Dogs

Treatment depends on the symptoms your fur baby is having. If the vet diagnoses your dog with an irritated digestive tract, they may give your dog antacids and anti-inflammatory medications.

On the other hand, if your dog has pancreatitis, the vet may need to put your dog on an IV for fluids and administer other medications. Your fur baby may require anti-inflammatories, medications to stop vomiting & diarrhea, and more.

Dogs who receive prompt medical treatment have a higher chance of making a complete recovery. So, be sure to keep spicy food out of your dog’s reach and never feed him anything very spicy. You’ll both be happier for it!
