Can My Dog Eat Peanut Butter?

The short answer is yes—probably. What on earth could be the problem with peanut butter? Let’s take a look.

While peanut butter contains healthy protein and fats, along with some important vitamins, some of the ingredients can be a problem for dogs.

1). Too much salt: some brands of peanut butter contain more salt than is good for a dog.

It is strongly recommended to contact a Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian.

2). Too much sugar: sugar is another problem that can be lurking in peanut butter. Too much sugar can lead to weight gain, obesity and even diabetes in dogs.

3). Too much fat: many brands of peanut butter may also contain too much fat for dogs. Or they may contain palm oil, which can have a laxative effect. Too much oil of any kind can also lead to pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas. This can be a dangerous condition in dogs.

4). Some brands of peanut butter contain xylitol: this is a very dangerous ingredient for dogs. It is toxic for dogs and can even lead to death. Even just a small amount can cause a dog’s blood sugar to go too low, which can lead to problems with disorientation, vomiting, seizures, and even liver failure.

As you can see, some brands of peanut butter can contain dangerous ingredients that can make dogs very sick.

Safe Peanut Butter Brands for Dogs

While we started off with some distressing information about some peanut butter ingredients, there are brands of peanut butter that are safe for dogs, in moderation.

When choosing a peanut butter for your fur baby, be sure to stick with those brands that don’t contain xylitol. Also look for brands that have low amounts of fat, sugar, and salt. And you can even serve your fur baby homemade peanut butter!
