What are Doritos?

Doritos are a type of tortilla chip that Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, produces. The original flavor of Doritos was plain; however, later, the company introduced nacho cheese Doritos. Since then, many other flavors have become available, too.

Today, over 100 different flavors of Doritos are available in the US! Some flavors of Doritos include Cool Ranch, Spicy Nacho, Ranch-Dipped Chicken Wings, Mountain Dew, and many more!

Doritos & Dogs

The good news is that if your dog only has a bite or two of plain Doritos, he will be OK. However, in larger amounts, even plain Doritos could make a dog sick.

Dogs should never eat Doritos on a regular basis, including the plain ones. There are some other risks involved with flavored Doritos.

For one thing, the chips may contain dye that is harmful to dogs. Certain dyes can cause kidney damage over time and even cause stomach irritation, especially in dogs that have sensitive stomachs.

In addition, the chips may contain artificial colors and preservatives that are not healthy for dogs. Some flavored chips may also contain garlic, onion, and other ingredients that are toxic to dogs. Plus, the chips contain too much fat for dogs.

For these reasons, dogs shouldn’t eat Doritos. As mentioned earlier, if your canine companion has had a couple of bites or even a few plain chips, chances are he will be OK. However, chips that contain other ingredients could make him sick.

Symptoms of Doritos Ingestion in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten Doritos:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite

If your dog has eaten plain Doritos and is experiencing these symptoms, it’s OK to monitor him. Be sure to call the vet if your dog’s vomiting and diarrhea last longer than 24 hours. There’s a concern these symptoms can cause your dog to become dehydrated.

If your dog has eaten flavored Doritos, check the ingredient label and check for any ingredients that are toxic for dogs (including garlic, onion, and more). Call the vet immediately and let them know what’s happened. Be sure to tell the vet about what time your dog ate the chips.

The good news is that dogs who eat Doritos usually make a full recovery! If your dog loves these chips, be sure to keep them out of your dog’s reach!
