What are Loquats?

They’re often used to make jam or jelly, but can also be baked into pies, tarts and more. These yummy fruits can even be eaten raw.

Loquat Seeds are Not Safe for Dogs

Loquats are very healthy fruits to eat; this fruit is also safe for dogs. There’s just one problem, however, and that is the fruits contain seeds or pits that contain cyanide.

The problem becomes worse if a dog eats several seeds. One seed may make a dog not feel well but eating several loquat seeds can even be life threatening, because cyanide is poisonous to dogs.

Not only that, but because loquat seeds are large, they can also pose a choking hazard to a dog, or cause an intestinal blockage.

Dog Symptoms from Eating Loquat Seeds

If your fur baby has eaten even one seed, then you’ll need to watch for these symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tremors
  • Lethargy
  • Excessive drooling
  • Choking (coughing/hacking/gagging)
  • Convulsions
  • Rapid breathing
  • Foaming at the mouth
  • Collapse
  • Shock
  • Abdominal pain/bloating
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

If you notice any of these symptoms after your canine companion as eaten one or more loquat seeds, then call the vet immediately. This is a medical emergency. The key is to get treatment as soon as possible. Your dog’s life could depend on this.

Depending on your dog’s symptoms, he may need to stay in the hospital for 24 hours of observation, IV fluid support, etc. If your dog has an intestinal blockage, he will require surgery.

Recovery from loquat seed poisoning will depend on how many seeds your fur baby ate, and how soon he was able to receive medical treatment. Dogs that receive fast treatment have a great prognosis and will go on to live happy, healthy lives.

Loquat fruits are very safe for your dog to eat, but don’t let him eat many. Otherwise, he could become nauseated and vomit, have diarrhea, etc. This will pass in a day or so.

Be sure to not let your dog eat loquat seeds; if he does, then get him to the vet quickly for medical treatment. You may just save his life.
