What is Kung Pao Chicken?

Kung pao chicken is a very yummy Chinese food that’s often served in Chinese restaurants. It can also be made at home, but why not order takeout? It’s easier, and then you don’t have to cook! The dish is pretty spicy and may contain peanuts and other great stuff.

We looked up the ingredients for kung pao chicken, and here’s what we found:

  • Chicken
  • White wine
  • Soy sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Cornstarch
  • Hot chile paste
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Brown sugar
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Water chestnuts
  • Peanuts (or cashews)

So, can any of these ingredients make your dog sick? The answer is yes.

Kung Pao Chicken & Dogs

Kung pao chicken contains several ingredients that are not good for dogs. The recipe contains onions and garlic, which are two ingredients known to be toxic for dogs. In addition, the recipe contains plenty of sodium (in the soy sauce), sugar, and oil. These are also not very healthy for dogs.

If you happen to order a takeout order of kung pao chicken, the food may also contain MSG and more.

So, it’s not a good idea to feed your dog kung pao chicken. And you may not have fed him this food. It’s quite possible your dog has simply helped himself!

What Symptoms Could a Dog Develop?

After eating kung pao chicken, it’s entirely possible your dog will end up with vomiting and diarrhea. This will depend on the amount of food he’s eaten.

If your dog had a very small bite of this dish, then chances are he will be just fine. However, if your dog managed to snarf down a lot of kung pao chicken, then he could develop serious vomiting and diarrhea.

Vomiting and diarrhea that lasts longer than 12-24 hours can be serious. This is because your dog could become dehydrated.

So, if your dog has eaten kung pao chicken and developed diarrhea and vomiting that last longer than 24 hours, then it’s time to call the vet. And be sure to call the vet even if your dog doesn’t have symptoms. Let the vet know what’s happened; then they can provide advice and guidance on how to treat any symptoms that may come up.
