What is Keto Bread?

Keto bread is similar to regular bread, but it’s made with low-carb ingredients. Bread for the Keto diet must not contain regular cereal flours, such as wheat or oats. Instead, the flour is replaced with low-carb ingredients such as almond flour, coconut flour, or even ground flaxseed meal.

It’s important to note that some keto bread recipes may contain artificial sweeteners, such as stevia. It’s essential to ensure that the keto bread you use does not contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs.

While keto bread is safe for humans, can dogs eat keto bread? Will keto bread make a dog sick?

Keto Bread & Dogs

It’s generally thought that keto bread is not toxic to dogs. However, it’s essential to make sure the recipe doesn’t include xylitol.

Some keto bread recipes may use almond or nut flours. It is possible for some dogs to have an allergic reaction to these flours. What’s more, nuts are high in fat, which can cause pancreatitis in dogs.

So, for these reasons, we don’t recommend allowing your dog to eat keto bread. If your dog eats a small piece of this bread, chances are he will be OK. However, if you know your dog is allergic to nuts, then avoid feeding him keto bread.

Symptoms of Keto Bread Ingestion in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has too much keto bread or is allergic to the ingredients in the bread:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Red, irritated skin
  • Excessive scratching
  • Breathing difficulties

If your dog is not allergic to keto bread’s ingredients but has eaten too much bread, it’s possible he will have some diarrhea and vomiting. This should last no longer than 24 hours. If the vomiting and diarrhea last longer, then be sure to call the vet. You want to avoid your fur baby become dehydrated.

If your dog is showing signs of an allergic reaction, then call the vet immediately. This is an emergency.

Most dogs can get away with eating a small piece of keto bread; however, it’s really best to avoid feeding this to your dog. Instead, offer your dog a healthy, dog-safe treat, and he’ll be very happy and healthy!
