What is Jaggery?

Jaggery is marketed as a sweetener that’s more healthy than sugar. It’s sometimes also used as a sugar replacement. Some even call this the “superfood” sweetener.

Jaggery is an unrefined product made from sugarcane and the toddy palm tree. The sugar is made from date palm sap. This sugary substance is made in Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.

The jaggery is formed into blocks or pastes of concentrated sugar syrup that have been heated to 392 F (200 C). This yummy sweet treat contains more than just sugar! It also contains iron, magnesium, potassium, and other nutrients.

While jaggery is safe for humans, what about dogs? Can jaggery make a dog sick?

Jaggery & Dogs

While jaggery does contain some important nutrients for canines, the treat is much too sugary for dogs. Jaggery is not toxic to dogs; however, it can still cause harm to a dog’s health.

Much like sugar, jaggery has similar effects on the dog’s body. For one thing, jaggery can cause dental issues (such as cavities and more). It can also disrupt the GI tract and cause inflammation throughout the dog’s body. And if a dog eats jaggery on a regular basis, he could become overweight, obese, or even develop diabetes.

So, it’s best to keep your dog from eating jaggery.

Jaggery Ingestion in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog’s eaten jaggery:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Hyperactivity
  • Lethargy

If you notice these symptoms in your dog, then it’s a good idea to call the vet. Let them know how much jaggery your dog has eaten and when this happened. Depending on your dog’s symptoms, the vet may ask to see your fur baby in the office for an evaluation.

As you can see, it’s not a good idea to feed your dog jaggery. Instead, give him safe treats (in moderation) such as fruit, dog biscuits, and more. These are safer and healthier snacks for your fur baby!
