Has your dog eaten bagels? Are you worried the bagels will make your dog sick? If so, you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog eats something like this.
We’ve gathered information about bagels and whether they can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!
What are Bagels?
Bagels are bread rolls that originally came from the Jewish communities in Poland. A bagel is traditionally shaped by hand into a hand-sized ring. The bagel is made from dough that contains yeast and is boiled a short time in water and then baked. This is the process that makes bagels dense, chewy, and delicious. These rolls have been around for hundreds of years.
This rolled bread comes in a wide range of flavors and types; some of them are covered with seeds, such as poppy and sesame seeds.
Today, bagels are a popular bread in North America and Poland.
While bagels are considered safe for humans, what about dogs? What happens if a dog eats bagels?
Bagels & Dogs
Unfortunately, bagels are not good for dogs. Bread, in general, is not healthy for dogs. In addition, bagels are filled with carbs and calories that can make them unhealthy for dogs.
In addition, some bagels contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs, including garlic, onion, poppy seeds, and more.
What’s more, eating a lot of dried bagels could cause a condition called food bloat in dogs. A dog may develop food bloat by eating a large amount of dry food, such as bagels. The dry food in the stomach absorbs water from the dog’s body and swells. This can lead to low blood pressure and other symptoms.
If your dog happens to have one bite of a bagel, chances are he will be OK. However, it’s essential to make sure the bagel doesn’t contain toxic ingredients for dogs. You’ll also need to monitor your dog for any symptoms that may develop.
Symptoms of Bagel Ingestion in Dogs
You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten bagels:
- Abdominal swelling
- Low blood pressure
- Bluish mucus membranes
- Dry heaves
- Sudden anxiety, pacing, unable to get comfortable
- Guarding his stomach/looking at his belly (due to discomfort)
- Panting & drooling
- Racing heartbeat
If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, call the vet immediately. This is an emergency.
Treatment of Bagels Ingestion in Dogs
When dogs suffer from bloat, they are usually hospitalized. The vet gives the dog large amounts of IV fluids and medication. The dog is also walked often to stimulate movement of the GI tract, which helps move gas and food through the dog’s system.
The vet may also give the dog pain medications and antibiotics. And in some cases, they may also need to perform a procedure that removes the gas from the stomach.
In severe cases of bloat, the vet may also need to perform surgery to untwist the dog’s stomach or spleen and remove any part of the stomach that may have died to due loss of blood flow.
The prognosis is best for dogs who receive prompt treatment after eating bagels. In the future, it’s best to avoid feeding bagels to your dog. You’ll both be happier for it!
