Alka Seltzer is an OTC medication used to treat heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, and more. The medicine is also used for stomach issues that are accompanied by headaches or body aches.

There are several different kinds of Alka Seltzer products; however, we’re looking at Alka Seltzer’s original flavor. This medication is in the form of effervescent tablets that dissolve in water. The tablets contain aspirin, citric acid, and sodium bicarbonate.

While Alka Seltzer is safe for humans (when used as directed), what about dogs? What happens if a dog eats Alka Seltzer?

Unfortunately, Alka Seltzer is toxic to dogs. Aspirin is toxic to dogs. In addition, citric acid and sodium bicarbonate can cause severe damage to the stomach lining.

Treatment of Alka Seltzer Ingestion in Dogs

The vet may try to induce vomiting and use activated charcoal to remove the toxins from your dog’s system. In certain instances, the vet may also need to perform gastric lavage to ensure the toxins are removed from your fur baby’s body.

They will also treat your dog’s other symptoms as they arise. Your fur baby may also require an IV with fluids and to administer medications.

Depending on your dog’s condition, he may need to be hospitalized until he’s in stable condition.

The prognosis is best for dogs who receive prompt medical treatment after eating Alka Seltzer. In the future, it’s best to keep all medications out of your dog’s reach. You’ll both be happier for it!
