What is Abuelita Chocolate Cake?

Abuelita chocolate cake is a special Mexican dessert cake that is scrumptious and served on special occasions, such as the Day of the Dead. It’s made with a special ingredient called Abuelita chocolate. This is a product put out by Nestle, which is used to make Mexican hot chocolate.

Abuelita chocolate may come in round tablets or wedges, but it also comes in a powder. It contains chocolate, sugar, artificial cinnamon flavoring and some stabilizers. The cake recipe also includes vanilla, butter, and milk.

The main issue with this cake in regard to dogs is that it contains chocolate.

It is strongly recommended to contact a Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian.

Chocolate is Toxic to Dogs

Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is poisonous to dogs. We humans can metabolize theobromine fairly quickly, so it doesn’t stick around in the body long to cause any harmful effects. However, dogs aren’t able to metabolize theobromine quickly. It stays in the body longer and cause lead to various medical issues.

Symptoms of Chocolate Poisoning in Dogs

You may notice your dog has the following symptoms after eating chocolate:

If you know for sure, or suspect, that your dog has eaten Abuelita cake, then you’ll need to call the vet immediately. This could be a medical emergency.

When you call the vet, try to tell them how much of the cake your has eaten, when he ate the cake, and the symptoms your dog is having. Then you’ll need to head right to the vet’s.

Treatment of Chocolate Toxicity in Dogs

At the vet, they may treat your dog by inducing vomiting or giving your dog activated charcoal. These help to rid the body of the toxin. If your dog’s case is severe, the vet may also initiate IV fluids and medications to help stop the effects of the toxin. It’s possible your dog may need to stay in the hospital for a few days until he’s stable.

The prognosis is very good for dogs that receive prompt medical treatment. And of course, the best medicine is prevention. Try to keep all chocolate, including Abuelita chocolate cake, out of your dog’s reach. If he really loves chocolate, you might consider giving him an alternative called carob. This tastes very similar to chocolate, and dogs love it!
