Should You Leave Your Dog In The Dark?

Why Does My Goldendoodle Shed?

So, back to the question – why does your Goldendoodle shed its puppy coat in the first place? You may have noticed that after a few months of paying for the pup and letting it into your home, it starts to shed.

So, what are some of the factors that contribute to excessive shedding of coats by Goldendoodles?

Reason #1: Genetic Mutations Cause Goldendoodles to Shed

You may have heard all those theories that Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic. And as such, they are less susceptible to shed.

That isn’t always true because the pup can shed for several reasons. One of the major reasons why your Goldendoodle does away with its puppy coat faster than it should is because of genetic mutations.

We can never excuse the role played by genes in dogs, and in the case of Goldendoodles, it appears to be so. Genetic mutations are high in Goldendoodles because they are crossbreeds.

Reason #2: Golden Retriever Genes are Dominating

The other reason why Goldendoodles shed their puppy coat (faster) is because they have some dominating genes. For example, Goldendoodles that have more of a Golden Retriever gene tend to shed the more because the parent dogs do the same.

Moreover, some Goldendoodle generations are more prone to shedding their puppy coats faster than other generations would. Those generations include:

  • First Generation (F1)
  • Second Generation (F2) and
  • Third Generation (F3)

Which Goldendoodle Generation Sheds the More?

Now that you understand the role played by Goldendoodle generations in shedding, you want to look at the generations that shed the most.

You need to understand that it can be a bit difficult to find out the Goldendoodle generation that sheds the most.

However, a rule of thumb you want to use at all times is to make independent research of different Goldendoodle generations so you can determine the one that sheds the most. Also, you would want to pay for a Goldendoodle that has more of a Poodle gene than a Golden Retriever because that is one of the ways to stop your Goldendoodle from shedding.

What Causes Excessive Shedding in Goldendoodles?

There are some instances where you need to take urgent steps to stop your Goldendoodle from shedding. Such is usually the case when your pup starts to suffer hair loss, bald spots, and constantly sheds its puppy coat.

Here are some of the factors that can cause your Goldendoodle to shed excessively:

  • Auto-immune diseases
  • Bacterial infections
  • When the dog is exposed to caustic substances
  • Parasites such as mites, fleas, and lice
  • Sunburn
  • Food-related allergies or inhalant
  • Cancer
  • Dog allergies and
  • Current medical problems the puppy is suffering from

How Can I Stop My Goldendoodle from Shedding?

Your Goldendoodle can stop shedding (excessively) if you take the right steps. Here are some of the strategic ways that you can cut down on the excessive shedding of puppy coat by your Goldendoodle:

Regularly Bathe Your Goldendoodle

You are not the only deserving of a regular bath. You should extend the same to your Goldendoodle because the puppy needs it to stay healthy and shed little.

The correlation between regular bathing and little shedding in Goldendoodles lies in the fact that dead hair will be washed and rinsed off when you regularly bathe your Goldendoodle.

Note that it is best to wash your Goldendoodle once a month during winter. Then, as summer approaches, you want to increase the washing routines to two (or more) times a month.

Limit Your Goldendoodle’s Stress

Stress also contributes to excessive shedding of hair by Goldendoodles. Considering that they are hyperactive dogs, it is no surprise that Goldendoodles will continually exercise and throw around their strength until they become exhausted.

You can nip that in the bud by cutting down on some of the activities that cause your puppy to be stressed. It could be by reducing the number of hours the dog plays or exercises. It could also be by moving over to a smaller living space where your Goldendoodle will have no choice than to reduce its exercise prowess thanks to the reduction in playing spaces in your apartment.

Feed Your Goldendoodle with More Nutritional Supplements

We cannot underplay the importance of nutritional supplements towards the reduction of excessive hair loss and shedding in Goldendoodles.

The general idea is that you need to feed your puppy with some of the best nutritional supplements out there so the body will be nourished and better equipped to fight excessive shedding.

To inspire you, here are some of the nutritional supplements you want to use on your Goldendoodle to improve its coat quality:

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

These acids are not only highly palatable. They are also derived from fish oil and can do a lot of wonder for your Goldendoodle’s health.

First, Omega 3 Fatty Acids boost the coat quality of your puppy, thereby making it thick and less susceptible to shedding.

Second and most important – Omega 3 Fatty Acids support the immune, joint, and heart health of your Goldendoodle.

Omega 6 Fatty Acids

You also want to add Omega 6 Fatty Acids to the list of nutritional supplements you want to add in your doodle’s diet because of the high amount of nutrients that improve the coat quality of your dog.

Brush Your Goldendoodle Consistently

You also want to be more consistent with brushing your doodle because that is one of the excellent ways of preventing it from excessive shedding.

The importance of doing that cannot be underemphasized considering some of the impressive benefits that include preventing mattes.

Invest in Good Grooming Tools

Last but not least is that you need to invest in good grooming tools that will make the task of grooming your Goldendoodle easier.

Some of the grooming tools you want to invest in include:

  • A grooming table where you will sit up your dog for easier brushing and grooming.
  • Self-cleaning slicker brushes for eliminating tangles and removing loose hair on your Goldendoodles.

Conclusion

You now know some of the reasons why your Goldendoodle sheds excessively. You can now use some of the preventive tips we shared to stop your doodle from shedding excessive puppy coat than it should.
