Pedialyte is a health remedy commonly found in our homes, especially if you have small kids! This product is also given to our canine friends. But what happens if a dog drinks too much Pedialyte?

Has your dog drunk Pedialyte? Are you worried the Pedialyte will make him sick? If so, you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog drinks something like this.

We’ve put together some information about Pedialyte and whether it can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!

What is Pedialyte?

Pedialyte is a liquid used to replace fluids and minerals lost because of diarrhea and vomiting. This OTC product can help keep a person from becoming dehydrated; it works to rehydrate a person’s body. The product is often used for infants, small children, and even adults.

Unflavored Pedialyte contains the following ingredients:

The ingredients in flavored Pedialyte may vary slightly.

While Pedialyte is safe for humans, what about dogs? Can Pedialyte make a dog sick?

Pedialyte & Dogs

Vets may sometimes recommend giving Pedialyte to a dog who is having GI issues, such as vomiting and diarrhea. However, some of the ingredients in this product can be harmful to dogs. So, never give your dog Pedialyte unless advised to do so by the vet.

Pedialyte has been specifically formulated for humans. The product contains too much sodium and sugar for dogs. It can be harmful to dogs that have certain conditions such as diabetes, kidney or heart disease, and more. In addition, pregnant and lactating dogs should not be given Pedialyte.

If your dog has drunk a large amount of Pedialyte, then it’s best to call the vet right away. This product is not toxic to dogs; however, some of the ingredients may make a dog sick, depending on the health issues he may have.

When your dog is experiencing a lot of vomiting and diarrhea, then be sure to call the vet. The vet can tell you if Pedialyte is safe to use for your dog and how much to give the dog. However, if your dog has been vomiting and had continuous diarrhea for several hours, the vet may ask you to bring in your canine companion. Dogs with non-stop diarrhea and vomiting need to be checked. They may have an upset stomach or something more serious. The vet can’t tell this until they get to examine the dog.

If your dog happens to drink a lot of Pedialyte, call the vet immediately. It’s possible the product could make your dog sick, depending on his health issues.

And remember never to give your dog Pedialyte unless directed to do so by the vet.
