Have you noticed that your dog’s pee smells like asparagus? If so, then you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog has some strange symptoms.

In this article, we’ll take a look at what may cause a dog’s pee to smell like asparagus and what you need to do to help your dog. Let’s get started!

What Causes a Dog’s Pee to Smell Like Asparagus?

In most cases, feeding a dog asparagus can cause their urine to smell like this green veggie. Have you started feeding your dog asparagus? If so, this could be the reason your canine companion’s urine smells so strongly of asparagus.

Fortunately, asparagus is safe for dogs to eat! However, one of the side effects can be stinky urine. But if your dog’s urine has a very foul odor, then there’s something else going on.

What Causes a Dog’s Pee to Smell Bad?

Some dogs may develop a bacterial or fungal infection in their urinary tract. These are called UTIs (urinary tract infections). They can happen in dogs of any age. The infections begin when a fungus or bacteria takes up residence in the dog’s urinary tract. Overgrowth of these bacteria or fungi can lead to a painful infection.

Another cause of bad-smelling urine in dogs can be something like kidney disease, metabolic disorders, and more can all cause this problem.

What to Do If Your Dog’s Pee Smells Like Asparagus?

First, check how much asparagus your dog is eating, as well as how often he’s eating the yummy veggie. It could be that cutting back on the amount or frequency of eating asparagus could help your dog’s urine issue.

Next, make sure your dog is getting plenty of water to drink. Dehydration can also cause a dog’s urine to smell very strong.

If these measures don’t seem to clear up the issue, it’s best to call the vet. They can run tests to see what’s causing your dog’s pee to smell like asparagus.

After making a diagnosis, the vet will know how to treat your dog’s medical condition. Once treatment has started, your dog’s urine will probably begin to smell better.

But keep in mind, if your dog eats a ton of asparagus (which is too much!), then his urine will definitely have a strong asparagus smell. Ask the vet how much asparagus your dog should be eating. It’s usually best to make this a once in a while treat for your dog!
