Amaranth is an ancient grain that was first cultivated in South America. Today this grain is grown around the world. It’s become popular in gluten free foods in the last decade or so, and is considered an alternative flour for those who need to avoid wheat and other grains.

Is amaranth safe for dogs and puppies? Can my dog eat amaranth? The short answer is yes! This grain has also become popular with dog food manufacturers in their gluten free recipes. A dog eating amaranth is OK; if your dog eats homemade, gluten free dog food, then be sure to first cook the grains before adding them to his food. Dog’s digestive systems are not made to digest raw plant materials. Let’s not forget puppies. Can my puppy eat amaranth? Yes—it’s also safe for puppies, but should only be given only occasionally and in small amounts.

How thoughtful. I’m the kind of person that loves gluten-free foods because I’ve been told to avoid wheat. So I eat them a lot in my house. And when I do, my dog is always around watching like he’s aware that he should be eating such too. I’ve always had to throw the leftovers whenever I have them but now I think it will definitely come in good use.

I don’t eat wheat too and when I first bought canned food for my dog, I read the labels to pick the best choice and I noticed that a lot of manufacturers had it in their gluten-free recipes. It’s very healthy for humans so I figured a dog eating amaranth is going to be safe and I’ve been giving my dogs.

okay, my mother makes most of her dog food from scratch and she’s been skeptical about adding amaranth grains. Knowing this would be a relief for her.

Oops. I think I’ve missed the part where I have to first cook the grains before adding them to their food. I don’t usually do that as I never knew that dog’s digestive systems are not made to digest raw plant materials. I just hope I’ve not caused any problems for them.
