Why Do Kittens Eat Things They Shouldn’t?

There are many reasons kittens eat things they shouldn’t. For one thing, kittens are naturally curious about anything and everything. Just like puppies, kittens explore things with their mouths. A kitten may see something interesting on the floor and then put it in her mouth. She may be trying to see if it’s food or not. The kitten may accidentally swallow the item, or she may think it is food and eat it.

Other times, kittens may eat certain things that seem like food due to nutritional deficiencies. And some kittens eat things they shouldn’t if they have a condition called pica. Pica is a behavioral issue that causes kittens (along with other animals and humans) to eat non-food items. The condition can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, parasites, and other medical issues. Or it can even be caused if a kitten is suffering from separation anxiety.

What to Do If Your Kitten Has Eaten Something She Shouldn’t

The best thing to do is to call the vet and let them know what your kitten has eaten. Depending on what the item was, the vet may suggest monitoring her for a day or two. They may tell you to watch for any symptoms that may develop in that time.

The vet may also want you to bring your kitten in to be checked. This is especially the case if she’s eaten anything toxic, a foreign object, or something else that’s very concerning.

Treatment will depend on what your kitten has eaten and any symptoms that may develop.

The best thing is to call your vet right away and not wait to see if your kitten develops any symptoms. Because kittens are so little, it doesn’t take much to make them sick. So, calling the vet right away is the best way to help your fur baby.

Kittens that eat something they shouldn’t can happen on a regular basis. So, it’s a good idea to try to keep her out of things that can be harmful to her. And keep all medications, chemicals, and more put away; where your little fur baby can’t gain access to them.
