Has your dog’s breath started smelling like coffee? Are you worried this could be an indication that your dog is sick? If so, then you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog develops this type of symptom.

In this article, we’ll take a look at what can cause a dog’s breath to smell like coffee and how you can help your dog. Let’s get started!

First Check This!

There are times when your fur baby may try to eat or drink something you have. This is a common behavior, and most of the time, it doesn’t make your dog sick. However, if your fur baby has had some of your coffee, this could be why his breath smells like coffee.

Coffee is very dangerous to dogs. If you know or suspect your dog has had some coffee, then call the vet immediately. This is a medical emergency.

Coffee & Dogs

The caffeine in coffee, tea, and other drinks is toxic to dogs. Dogs are not able to metabolize caffeine as we do.

If your dog has had a drink of coffee, you may notice these symptoms:

Bear in mind that symptoms may not show up until 30 minutes later or even 12 or more hours later. The amount of caffeine determines the level of toxicity in the dog.

Treatment of Caffeine Toxicity in Dogs

At the vet’s, they will perform a physical exam of your dog. They will also order lab work. The vet may induce vomiting if your dog has recently imbibed the coffee. They may also use activated charcoal to limit the toxin being absorbed in the digestive tract.

In most cases, your dog will require an IV for fluids and administer medications to stop vomiting and diarrhea and to treat other symptoms.

The good news is that dogs who receive prompt medical treatment have the best chances of making a complete recovery. So, get your dog to the vet ASAP if he’s had coffee or any other food that contains caffeine.
