What is Dawn Dish Soap?

Dawn is a brand of dishwashing liquid that’s put out by the Procter & Gamble company. It was first introduced back in 1973; from that time, it has become the best-selling dish soap in the US.

The soap is known for its degreasing properties. In fact, Dawn is used to oil from animals who have suffered from oil spills. You may have even seen the TV ads showing ducks and other critters covered in oil, which is removed with Dawn! You’ll be happy to know that Dawn is really used in this manner to help wildlife.

Dawn dish soap contains the following ingredients:

  • Water
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Sodium laureth sulfate
  • Lauramine oxide
  • Sodium chloride
  • Phenoxyethanol
  • PEI-14 PED-10/PPG 7 copolymer
  • Methylisothiazolinone
  • Fragrance
  • Yellow 5

While Dawn can safely be used to wash dishes and even remove oil from wildlife, can it make dogs sick?

Dawn Dish Soap & Dogs

The good news is that Dawn is not considered toxic; however, it can make a dog sick if he licks up too much of the liquid. It is very concentrated and can lead some dogs to get sick.

Your dog’s symptoms will probably include gastrointestinal issues and a stomach ache. These can develop even from licking the soap. However, in most cases, if your dog only licks a little bit of the dishwashing soap, he should be OK.

What to Do if Your Dog Licks Dawn Dishwashing Soap

If your dog does happen to lick a small amount of Dawn, then be sure to monitor him for any symptoms. These may include vomiting and diarrhea. If these symptoms last longer than 24 hours or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms, then it’s best to call the vet.

The vet will have medications that can stop diarrhea and vomiting, as well as treat your dog for possible dehydration.

So, in most cases, your dog will be OK. But we do recommend monitoring your dog for any symptoms that last longer than 24 hours or are worrisome. Your vet will be the best source of advice on how to help your dog feel better.
