Enjoying lemonade on a hot summer day is so refreshing! You can sit in the shade with a chilled glass of lemonade and stay cool. However, what happens if you leave your glass unattended and your dog drinks some of the lemonade? Can lemonade make a dog sick?

Has your dog drunk lemonade? Are you worried the lemonade will make him sick? If so, then you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog drinks something like this.

In this article, we’ve put together some information about lemonade and whether it can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!

What is Lemonade?

Lemonade, in the US, is a drink made with lemon juice, sugar (or another sweetener), and iced. However, lemonade has a longer history! The citrusy drink first appeared in France back in the 16th century. Back then, the drink was made with the same ingredients found in the lemonade in the US today.

Yellow lemons are used for lemonade, which is why the drink is usually yellow, though a little cloudy.

Humans can safely enjoy lemonade, but what about dogs? Can lemonade make a dog sick?

Lemonade & Dogs

It’s safe to say that if your dog has a lick or two of lemonade, chances are he will be OK. However, drinking more could make a dog sick.

However, because lemons are highly acidic, it is possible that a dog could develop acid reflux after drinking lemonade. Also, keep in mind that wild canines do not eat citrus fruits. These are not a part of their natural diet.

For this reason, it’s best to keep lemonade and other citrus drinks/fruits out of your dog’s reach.

If your dog shows signs of an upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting, then it may be a good idea to call the vet. Be sure to explain what’s happened and about how much lemonade your dog has drunk. This information will help the vet determine the right steps to help your canine companion.

Prevention is always the best medicine! So, be sure to keep lemonade out of your dog’s reach and never leave a glass of lemonade unattended. Our canine friends are sometimes very curious about what we’re eating and drinking. Their curiosity may lead them to drink something that could make them very sick. So, try to keep lemonade away from your dog and offer him plenty of cool, freshwater instead!
