What is Lotrimin?

Lotrimin, also called clotrimazole, is an antifungal medication used to treat athletes’ foot, jock itch, ringworm, and other fungal infections.

This medication is only used on the skin and used about twice a day or as directed by a healthcare professional.

While Lotrimin is safe for humans (when used as directed), what about dogs? Can Lotrimin make a dog sick?

Lotrimin & Dogs

The good news is that Lotrimin can be used on dogs; however, you should not use this medication on your dog without your vet’s advice. While the medication is safe when applied to the dog’s skin, ingestion may cause vomiting and diarrhea.

An even bigger problem is if the dog happens to eat a part of the medication’s tube (or the entire tube). The tube is made of material that’s not digestible and could cause the dog to develop an intestinal blockage.

Symptoms of Lotrimin Ingestion in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten Lotrimin:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

If diarrhea and vomiting last longer than 24 hours, then be sure to call the vet. The concern is that your dog could become dehydrated from continuous or repeated vomiting and diarrhea.

The vet has medications to stop diarrhea and vomiting. They may also treat your dog with IV fluids if he’s dehydrated. Most dogs will make full recovery after eating the medication.

If your dog has eaten the Lotrimin product tube, you may notice these symptoms of he’s developed an intestinal blockage:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain & swelling
  • Whining
  • Dehydration
  • Restlessness

If your dog has developed these symptoms, then call the vet immediately. This is an emergency. If left untreated, an intestinal blockage can lead to death.

In this case, the vet may try to remove the tubing if it’s in the stomach. This can be done through an endoscopic procedure. However, if the tubing is further along in the dog’s digestive tract, the vet may need to perform emergency surgery. This procedure’s necessary to remove the blockage safely.

In most cases, dogs who receive prompt medical treatment of an intestinal blockage will make a full recovery.

As you can see, Lotrimin can make a dog sick! So, be sure to keep this and other medications out of your dog’s reach. And only use this medication on your dog if the vet advises this.
