What is Key Lime Pie?

Key Lime Pie is a classic dessert that originally came from the Florida Keys. There, the dessert is made with limes that are grown in the Keys. The pie’s made with graham crackers (used as the base of the pie), sugar, salt, butter, grated zest from one lime, eggs, sweetened condensed milk, Key lime juice, and Key lime oil.

This combination of ingredients creates a yummy dessert that’s both tart and sweet! While humans can safely enjoy Key Lime Pie, what about dogs? Can Key Lime Pie make them sick?

Limes & Dogs

Limes can make a dog sick. The fact is that every part of the lime is toxic to dogs, including the skin, flesh, and juice. Even the essential oil of limes is toxic to dogs. It’s even possible for a dog to brush up against a lime tree and develop skin irritation soon after.

So, limes are not good for dogs. The amount of toxicity depends on how much lime the dog has eaten. For example, a large dog eating a small bit of lime may not have serious symptoms. However, a small dog eating the same amount of lime could become seriously ill.

What About Key Lime Pie?

When it comes to Key Lime Pie, it’s also not good for dogs. The limes are toxic, and the high fat and sugar are also not healthy for our canine friends. The pie could set off pancreatitis and other health issues if ingested.

What About Other Key Lime Foods?

You’ll find there are other foods flavored with Key Limes. These include yogurt, lime juice, and more. These foods are all dangerous for dogs because the limes are toxic for canines. So, don’t feed your dog anything that’s flavored with Key Limes or other types of limes.

Symptoms of Key Lime Pie Ingestion

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten some Key Lime Pie:

  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Cold limbs
  • Collapse
  • Lethargy
  • Liver failure
  • Loss of coordination
  • Weakness
  • And more

If you notice these symptoms in your dog, then call the vet right away. This could be an emergency.

The prognosis is very good for dogs who receive prompt medical care after eating Key Lime Pie or other lime-flavored foods.
