What is Gorgonzola?

Gorgonzola is a type of cheese that originally came from Gorgonzola, Italy. It is usually made with unskimmed cow’s milk and contains blue veins throughout the cheese. Some say this cheese has a buttery consistency, while others say the cheese is sometimes crumbly and salty. The blue veins usually have a taste that “bites.”

This type of cheese is usually enjoyed in various ways. It’s sometimes added to salads, used in salad dressing, used on pizza, or even as a topping on steak! Gorgonzola may also be made into a sauce using Port or other types of sweet wine.

There’s no question that pet parents can safely eat Gorgonzola. However, what about dogs? Can dogs eat Gorgonzola cheese?

Gorgonzola & Dogs

While some cheeses are safe for dogs, Gorgonzola is not recommended for our canine companions. This is because the cheese contains a type of mold that produces a substance called roquefortine C. Roquefortine C is a known toxin for dogs, which can lead to death in some dogs. The more cheese of this type a dog eats, the higher his chances of getting sick from the cheese.

Another problem is that some dogs have a dairy intolerance, while others have an allergy to dairy products.

Gorgonzola Poisoning Symptoms in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten Gorgonzola:

  • Lethargy
  • Excessive panting
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting

If your dog shows any of these symptoms, call the vet immediately. This is an emergency.

It may be difficult to tell if your dog is having an allergic reaction, an intolerant reaction, or is suffering from eating the mold in the cheese. This is why it’s essential to call the vet right away. Don’t wait to see if your dog’s symptoms will improve or worsen. Time is of the essence when it comes to your dog’s health in this situation.

The prognosis is best for dogs that receive medical treatment as soon as possible after eating Gorgonzola.
