What is Ginkgo Fruit?

Ginkgo fruit is produced by ginkgo trees, which are native to China. They’re popular in other parts of Asia and also grow in parts of the U.S. Gingko are large trees that may reach up to 115 ft when fully matured! In the fall, the tree’s leaves turn a bright yellow and add beautiful color to this time of the year.

When it comes to reproduction, there are male and female ginkgo trees. Male plants create the pollen cones, while female plants produce two ovules. After pollination, these then develop into seeds. This is called “ginkgo fruit.” The seed is usually between 1.5 to 2 cm long and has a fleshy outer layer, which is a yellow-brown color. This outer layer is soft and a bit like fruit. Inside the shell is the seed.

The male plants are not toxic to dogs; however, the female trees do contain a toxin that is harmful to dogs.

Symptoms of Ginkgo Fruit Toxicity in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten ginkgo fruit:

  • Vomiting
  • Irritability
  • Seizures
  • Blisters/peeling/irritated skin (around the mouth, face, and on the paws)

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, then call the vet immediately.

Treatment of Ginkgo Fruit Ingestion in Dogs

We weren’t able to find specific information on how the vet would treat a dog for ginkgo fruit ingestion. However, the vet would treat this as they would any other toxin. However, the vet might not induce vomiting since the fruit can be irritating to the skin/throat.

The vet may use activate charcoal and an IV with fluids to keep your dog hydrated. They would then treat any other symptoms as they appeared.

The prognosis is always best for dogs who receive prompt medical treatment after eating any type of toxin. The same would apply to eating ginkgo fruit.

So, if your dog has eaten ginkgo fruit and isn’t showing any symptoms, still be sure to call the vet right away. The sooner your dog receives treatment, the sooner he can feel better. His chances of making a complete recovery are also higher if he receives medical treatment as soon as possible!
