Big Red Gum & Dogs

Big Red Gum can make a dog sick; however, there’s nothing toxic in the gum. If your dog has eaten only one piece of the gum, chances are he will be OK. The gum may cause some stomach upset, diarrhea, and vomiting. If these last longer than 12-24 hours, then be sure to call the vet.

On the other hand, if your dog has eaten a large amount of Big Red Gum, there’s a chance he could develop an intestinal obstruction. The gum could completely block the dog’s digestive tract and cause a life-threatening emergency.

Symptoms of Intestinal Obstruction in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten a large amount of Big Red Gum:

  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain & swelling

If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, call the vet immediately. This is an emergency. These may indicate your dog has an intestinal blockage. This is a life-threatening condition if it’s not treated quickly.

The key is to get your dog to the vet ASAP. Dogs that receive prompt medical care for an intestinal blockage have the highest chances of making a complete recovery.

It’s always best to keep gum out of your dog’s reach. And keep him from picking up and eating gum off the ground. Prevention’s always the best medicine!
