It is strongly recommended to contact a Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian.

What is Bed Stuffing?

Dog beds may be stuffed with various materials, such as memory foam or polyester fiberfill. These materials are used to make the bed more comfortable for the dog, much like we have a mattress on our beds. The stuffing acts like a mattress in the dog bed, too. Not only does it keep him more comfortable, but the stuffing also acts as insulation to keep your dog warm or cool.

Bed Stuffing & Dogs

Unfortunately, bed stuffing can be extremely dangerous for dogs. For one thing, the stuffing may choke a dog by blocking his airways, making it impossible to breathe. Symptoms of this type of problem will show as your dog coughing and gagging, unable to breathe. If your dog is choking, call the vet immediately!

The other danger is that a dog may swallow bed stuffing in large amounts. The stuffing could then become lodged somewhere in the dog’s digestive tract and cause an intestinal blockage.

Symptoms of Bed Stuffing Ingestion in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten bed stuffing:

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, call the vet immediately. This is an emergency.

Let the vet know about how much of the bed stuffing the dog has eaten. Then let them know about what time this happened.

In some cases, a dog with this issue may require emergency surgery to safely remove the bed stuffing from his digestive tract.

Dogs who receive prompt treatment have the best chance of making a full recovery. So, make sure to get your canine companion to the vet ASAP! His life depends on it!
