What Are Artificial Tears?

Artificial tears are eye drops used to lubricate the eye and relieve dryness and irritation. They’re often used by people who have dry eye syndrome and other eye issues. The product can also be used to moisten contact lenses.

The artificial tears work to increase eye lubrication by mimicking the eye’s natural tears.

Artificial Tears & Dogs

The good news is that artificial tears are not toxic in dogs when used correctly. They are sometimes prescribed by vets to help a dog who has dry, irritated eyes or other eye issues.

If the vet prescribes artificial tears for a dog, they may recommend an OTC product for humans. However, the vet will prescribe the right dosage for the dog.

What happens if a dog eats the artificial tears? In most cases, the dog should be OK. However, it is possible that some dogs could be allergic to the drops. If the vet has prescribed the drops for your dog and he’s not had any trouble, then eating the drops probably won’t make him sick. But if another dog in your home has eaten the drops, then it’s best to monitor him for any signs of an allergic reaction.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:

  • Hives,
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty breathing

This is a serious medical problem, and it’s imperative to call the vet now. Your dog needs medical treatment ASAP.

Reactions like this are rare; however, they are possible. So, be sure to monitor your dog. And always keep medications out of your dog’s reach. Prevention is always the best medicine!
