Afrin is a popular medication that many people take when they have colds, flu, allergies, and other conditions that cause a stuffy nose. The problem with these medications, when you have a dog, is that your fur baby may see you use the medicine and decide you’re “eating” it.

In that case, when you’re not looking, he may head over to the Afrin bottle and chew the top off, drinking the fluid inside. But what happens if a dog eats Afrin?

Has your dog eaten Afrin? Are you worried that Afrin will make your dog sick? If so, you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog eats something like this.

It is strongly recommended to contact a Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian.

We’ve gathered some information about Afrin and whether it can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!

What is Afrin?

Afrin is an OTC nasal spray that helps relieve a stuffy nose. However, using this medicine more than three days in a row can make your stuffy nose worse.

The medication works as a decongestant that causes the blood vessels in your nose and sinuses to constrict, which decreases nasal swelling and makes it easier to breathe.

Some people take this medication for colds, flu, allergies, and other conditions that cause a stuffy nose.

While Afrin has been shown to be safe for humans (when used as directed), what about dogs? What happens if a dog eats Afrin?

Afrin & Dogs

Unfortunately, Afrin can be toxic to dogs. The severity of a dog’s symptoms depends on the amount of Afrin ingested and the size of the dog.

Symptoms of Afrin Toxicity in Dogs

You may notice these symptoms if your dog has eaten Afrin:

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, call the vet immediately. This is an emergency.

Treatment of Afrin Toxicity in Dogs

The vet may induce vomiting and use activated charcoal if your dog has ingested Afrin within the last 30 minutes. These methods work to decontaminate your dog’s system. If it has been longer than 30 minutes, the vet may use gastric lavage to clean the medication from your dog’s stomach.

In addition, the vet will offer supportive treatment of symptoms as they arise. Your fur baby may require an IV with fluids and to administer medications. Other medications your dog may need include muscle relaxers, sedatives, and more to control shaking and tremors. Some dogs may also need supplemental oxygen if they are having trouble breathing.

Some dogs may need to be hospitalized until they’re in stable condition.

The prognosis is best for dogs who receive prompt medical treatment after eating Afrin. In the future, it’s best to keep this and all medications out of your dog’s reach. You’ll both be happier for it!
