Grapes are a wonderful treat to enjoy in the summer or at any time! These crunchy fruits are full of juice that’s a bit tart and a bit sweet! As you eat grapes, your cat may come around and ask for some, too! But what happens if a cat eats grapes?

Has your cat eaten grapes? Are you worried the grapes will make your cat sick? If so, you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your cat eats something like this.

We’ve gathered information about grapes and whether they can make a cat sick. Let’s get started!

It is strongly recommended to contact a Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian.

What are Grapes?

Grapes are luscious fruits! But did you know they’re actually classified as berries? That was a new one for us! This beautiful fruit grows in clusters on long, woody vines. Experts believe grapes were first cultivated about 8,000 years ago and have been a favorite with humans since that time.

These fruits can be dried, eaten fresh, used to make wine, and more. Grapes are also used to make jams, juice, vinegar, and oil.

While grapes are safe for humans, what about cats? Can grapes make a cat sick?

Grapes & Cats

Unfortunately, grapes are not recommended for cats (or dogs). Grapes are a known toxin for dogs; however, experts are not sure whether grapes have the same toxic effects on cats or not. However, they usually advise against feeding cats grapes.

It’s thought that grapes may cause kidney issues in cats, too, like in dogs. So, they advise not to feed your cat grapes.

Symptoms of Grape Ingestion in Cats

You may notice these symptoms if your cat has eaten grapes:

If you notice any of these symptoms in your cat, call the vet immediately. This is an emergency.

Treatment of Grape Toxicity in Cats

There is no antidote for grape toxicity in cats. So, the vet will try to decontaminate the cat’s system by inducing vomiting or using activated charcoal. The vet will treat other symptoms as they arise.

In some cases, your fur baby may require an IV for fluids and to administer medications. Your feline companion may also require other supportive treatment.

The prognosis is best for cats that receive prompt medical care after eating grapes. If your cat has a penchant for grapes, it’s essential to keep these out of your cat’s reach. You’ll both be happier for it!
