Has your cat eaten almond butter? Are you worried the almond butter will make your cat sick? If so, you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your cat eats something like this.

We’ve put together some information about almond butter and whether it can make a cat sick. Let’s get started!

It is strongly recommended to contact a Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian.

Are Almonds Toxic for Cat?

The answer depends on the type of almonds a cat eats. Sweet almonds sold at the store are not toxic to cats. However, they are high in fat and could cause some digestive issues in a kitty.

On the other hand, bitter almonds are toxic to cats because these nuts contain cyanide. A cat that eats bitter almonds could suffer cyanide poisoning.

The good news is that most almond products from the store are made with sweet almonds. This includes almond milk, butter, and more.

When it comes to almond butter, the product can be high in fat and sugar.  So, before your cat eats the almond butter, it’s crucial to check the ingredient list. If the product includes sugar, then this is not safe for your cat to eat.

In addition, almond butter is thick and sticky. It’s possible that butter could be difficult to swallow. So, if your fur baby has almond butter, make sure to monitor her and watch for difficulty swallowing.

One more problem is that some cats could even be allergic to almond butter. That means if such a cat ate the butter, she could develop an allergic reaction, including an anaphylactic reaction.

Symptoms of Almond Butter Ingestion in Cats

You may notice these symptoms if your fur baby has eaten almond butter:

If your kitty has these symptoms, be sure to monitor her. However, you should call the vet if your cat’s symptoms last longer than 24 hours. These symptoms can lead to dehydration in cats.

The good news is the vet has medications to stop the vomiting and diarrhea. In addition, if your kitty has become dehydrated, the vet can treat her with IV fluids.

As you can see, almond butter in very small amounts can be safe for cats. So, be sure to monitor your cat’s almond butter intake! She can have this as a once in a while treat, but not more often than that!
