Palm trees are beautiful and are found in many warm areas of the US. But if you’re a pet parent, should you be concerned if your dog eats part of a palm tree? Dogs do eat some strange things occasionally, including palm tree parts!

Has your dog eaten palm tree parts? Are you worried the palm tree will make your dog sick? If so, you’ve come to the right place. We understand it can be scary when your dog eats something like this.

We’ve put together some information about palm trees and whether they can make a dog sick. Let’s get started!

What are Palm Trees?

Palm trees are beautiful and are famous for their fronds blowing in the wind and providing shade in warm parts of the country. However, what is a palm tree? Are they even real trees? Here’s a definition we found at Merriam-Webster online:

“A kind of tree that grows in tropical regions and has a straight, tall trunk and many large leaves at the top of the trunk.”

That is the description of most palm trees you may be familiar with! However, there are over 2,780 different types of palm trees on the planet today. Most palms are part of the Arecaceae family and live in tropical and subtropical areas that are warm. Some palms produce fruit, such as coconut palm, date palm, and more.

While these trees are pretty, are they dangerous to dogs? Are palm trees toxic to dogs?

Palm Trees & Dogs

Unfortunately, some palm trees are poisonous to dogs. The main ones are the sago palm (not a true palm) and the betel nut palm.

However, it’s possible for a dog to get sick eating other palms, too.

What to Do If Your Dog Has Eaten Palm Tree Materials

If your dog has eaten palm tree materials, you may want to call the vet right away. This is especially the case if you’re unsure what type of palm tree your dog has eaten. We recommend this action because some palms are toxic to dogs. And it’s best to err on the side of caution in this situation.

So, don’t wait to see if your dog develops symptoms; call the vet immediately.

And if you find the palms in your yard are toxic to dogs, you may want to keep your dog from that area. This may be done by fencing off part of the yard for your fur baby away from the tree. And be sure to watch your canine companion when out for a walk. He may be tempted to eat part of a palm tree, such as the fruit or fronds, that could make him sick!
