Kohlrabi, also known as German turnip, is in the Brassica oleracea family, which includes cabbage, broccoli and others. This vegetable is a green-colored tuber that originated in northern parts of Europe, but now is enjoyed in other countries, too. The taste of German turnip has been described as similar to cabbage, but a little sweeter. Others describe the taste as something like water chestnut, but with a crunchier texture. It’s a versatile veggie that can be enjoyed in many different ways, including raw, pan-fried as steak fries, sautéed with carrots, or even mixed with cabbage to make coleslaw. Kohlrabi is packed with Vitamins B6, C, calcium, folate, phosphorous and more. It’s quite healthy!

Can my dog eat kohlrabi? Yes! And what about my puppy—can my puppy eat kohlrabi? Yes, again! Your pup can enjoy this very healthy veggie in moderation. First peel off the outer skin and then you can cook/steam German turnip until soft, and then mash it and then add it to your fur baby’s normal dog food. Cooking this tuber will make it soft and easier for your dog to digest. What if my dog or puppy eating too much kohlrabi? If your dog eats too much of anything, it’s not good. Feeding your pup too many vegetables could lead to an upset stomach, vomiting and possibly diarrhea. Remember to only add small amounts to your pup’s food once in a while to avoid these issues.
