Opened on Oct. 1, 1970, the Walt Disney World complex consists of four theme parks, two water parks, and numerous other attractions. On May 20, 2022, self-government for the Disney Company in Florida’s resort areas would end. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued legislation directing that the resort area be placed within the jurisdiction of the state of Florida.
The legislation would end the state-run authority that has run the area around Disney World for more than 50 years, when Florida Governor Claude Kirk had the authority to give the Disney Company this authority. The new laws will take effect in June 2023.
