How to Choose a Name for Your Dog

Finding the right name is a challenge, and it’s very tempting to just use one of the most popular names being used right now. However, there’s more to a name than just choosing one that’s popular. In fact, a name that’s popular can be a problem. We’ll get to that in a minute.

We’ve done some research and found some recommendations and considerations on how to choose the right name for your dog. Let’s get started!

Keep it short: scientific research has shown that dogs respond best to name that are about 2 syllables long. It’s OK to choose a longer name, but it’s best to use the shorter version of that name when calling your dog or giving him cues while training. Dogs have the ability to hear a wide range of frequencies; in fact, they can hear sounds that are too high for us to hear. These subtle differences are picked up when we say our dog’s name. They can hear this, even when we can’t. This is one way dogs are able to distinguish your voice in a noisy space, such as a dog park.

Avoid names with negative meanings: our canine companions are sensitive beings. If you give them a name that has negative vibes, they’ll pick up on it. Every time you say the dog’s name, they may act a little sad, hanging their head, and more. This is because they feel the negative connotation you associate with their name. Another thing some people find funny is giving their dog a name that is a racial slur, embarrassing, or just a bad name for an evil character from a movie or TV show. Or the pet parents may choose a name that’s just gross. Can you imagine calling the vet to see “Snots” is ready to go yet?

Don’t choose a name that sounds like a cue: this is another issue that some people don’t realize can be confusing to dogs. If you give them a name like “Bo,” and then tell the dog to “go,” he’ll be confused. He won’t know if you’re saying his name or giving him a cue to do something.

Choose a unique name: OK, we promised to talk about this. For one thing, choosing a name that’s extremely popular for dogs right now is a mistake. Why? What happens if you’re at the dog park and call your dog’s name? You’ll have every dog, but yours, running to you! Or if your dog thinks he hears someone calling him, he’ll go running off with all the other dogs who share that name. Have fun catching up with him! Another issue is choosing a name that rhymes with other family member or pet names. Be sure to choose a unique name for your dog, one that doesn’t sound like anyone else’s name, and one that’s not extremely popular with other pet parents.

Choose a name based on personality/characteristics: your dog could be the ultimate inspiration of a name! Consider his personality. Does your canine companion have some unique personality quirks that would make a great name? What about his characteristics? Does your dog have freckles, a unique color of fur, or a unique eye color? These are some ideas on how you can find inspiration for your dog’s name, a name that will be based directly on his personality or characteristics.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this article and that you’ve found the perfect name for your dog!
