Just like a good night’s sleep is important for us, our canine companions also need a comfortable place to sleep and good sleeping habits. Did you know that the quality of your dog’s sleep can determine his health? This is especially true if you have an older dog, one who suffers from arthritis or other health issues.

Did you know that dogs sleep an average of 12-14 hours a day? This varies from dog to dog, and breed to breed. Other factors determining how much your dog sleep is his age, size, health, etc. Dogs who don’t get enough sleep can experience disorientation, mental confusion, forgetful, etc. You may also find that he’s grumpier when he doesn’t get enough sleep.

All typical signs of sleep deprivation are very similar to what we humans experience when we don’t get enough sleep

So how does a dog bed come into play for your dog’s health? Why is it important he has a snug place to sleep?

Why Does Your Dog Need a Bed?

Your pup needs and deserves enough sleep to maintain his health. Here are some reasons he needs a dog bed:

1). Physical health: your dog needs a comfortable bed that supports his weight and relieves skeletal stress as he sleeps. While your pup can sleep on an old piece of carpet or an old blanket, these do not provide the support your dog’s body needs. This is especially true for overweight and/or older dogs. In this case, your pup has very specific support needs, especially if he has arthritis.

2). Provides insulation against cold and heat: weather, cold or hot flooring can keep your pup from sleeping well. A dog bed offers protection and insulation against these issues. In the winter hard wood and tile flooring can be cold; or heated floors can become uncomfortably warm for your fur baby. Summer can see the same issues with overheated flooring or flooring that’s too cold (for instance from air conditioning). A dog bed can keep your dog comfortable all through the year.

3). Protect furniture: pets can wreak havoc on furniture by adding additional wear and tear. Leather can become stretched or scratched, upholstered furniture (sofas and chairs) can rip and fray, while wooden furniture may not be sturdy enough to support your canine friend’s weight (depending on his size). In addition, most dogs shed, leaving your furniture looking like giant hairballs. Giving your pet his own bed will relieve some of these issues.

Best Dog Beds

Choosing the right bed for your pup doesn’t have to be a complicated process, but it is important to do your research and shop around before buying a pet bed. Take the time to choose the best bed for your pal—it’s not only for his comfort, but also to help keep him healthy.

Here’s a list of the best dog beds to help your pooch sleep comfortably any time of the day or night:

1). DogBed4Less Orthopaedics Memory Foam Bed for Dogs

Here’s a pet bed designed for a pup of any age. This dog bed comes with a waterproof liner (to protect the memory foam) and 2 external covers. The external covers are made of 100% cotton denim that’s machine washable.

The hypoallergenic orthopedic foam offers comfort and support for your pup with 100% solid memory foam. The memory foam is especially helpful for older and overweight dogs—it’s five times denser and four times heavier than conventional foam. Your fur baby will have the perfect balance between support and comfort with this dog bed.

This dog bed comes in different sizes: small/medium, medium/large, large, extra-large and 2x’s extra-large.  You’ll find just the right size mattress for your pup!

2). Big Barker Pillow Top Orthopedic Dog Bed

This dog bed is a great choice for larger dogs. This orthopedic mattress is made with 7 inches of therapeutic foam—made in America. The high-quality foam offers three layers—a 3-inch support layer, surrounded by two inches of comfort foam. Larger dogs sink into the upper 2-inch comfort foam, with their bodies supported by the middle layer.

Every part and curve of your dog’s body will be supported and the foam won’t flatten out under your pup’s weight. The product is guaranteed to “retain at least 90% of its shape and support for the next 10 years,” or the company will replace it.

This dog bed is best for medium to large dogs. Small dogs don’t have enough weight to depress the foam all the way to the middle layer. As a result, a small dog will find this bed extremely stiff and uncomfortable.

This bed comes in different sizes for large dogs: large, extra-large and giant.

3). Kuranda Chewproof Elevated Dog Bed

Does your pup have lots of thick fur? If so, then the Kuranda Chewproof Elevated Dog Bed may be just the right one for your canine! This dog bed frame is made of heavy-duty PVC and can hold dogs up to 100 lbs.

The center of the bed is made of a sturdy fabric called Cordura, which is very similar to canvas material. It’s strong, abrasion resistant and offers a comfortable, cooling place to sleep. Your pup will be comfortable, dry and cool when sleeping on this pet bed.

The Kuranda dog bed offers the same style of dog bed made with an aluminum frame. It’s just perfect for larger dogs and will safely support their weight.

4). Majestic pet Suede Bagel dog bed

Some dogs love to create a nest of covers, in just the right configuration, when they sleep. If your pup is like this, then he’ll enjoy this dog bed. Just as the name implies, this bed is in the shape of a bagel—well, more like an oval bagel. The bed actually has an inner and outer ring. The inner ring is where your canine pal sleeps, and the outer ring provides padded support. Your pup could even use the outer ring as a pillow.

The cushion is made of high loft polyester fiber fill, which adapts to your pup’s frame and is comfortable all night long. This bed is also machine washable (the manufacturer recommends washing in an oversize washer using the gentle cycle, then air drying).

This dog bed comes in four different sizes: 24-inch, 32-inch, 40-inch, and 52-inch.

5). The Snoozer Luxury Corner Dog Bed

This is a pet bed that is great for those living in apartments or small houses, as it fits well in a corner. This space-saving bed is built of sturdy, high-density foam and offers a padded cushion inside made of polyethylene.

This dog bed comes in a small, medium and large, and also offers a choice of several colors, making it easy to match your home’s décor and your color preferences.

6). HappyCare Textile Reversible Bed for Pets

Here’s a bed your pup will love. This pet bed is reversible, with each side made of different fabric. One side is made of sherpa, which is soft and warm in the winter. The other side is made of a smooth faux suede that’s cooler for summer weather. This bed is machine washable.

This dog bed comes in medium or extra medium, just right for small to medium-sized dogs. However, some customers report that their larger dogs also enjoy using this bed. Photos show larger dogs “oozing” off the bed, while enjoying a comfortable, sound sleep.

7). Barks Bar Orthopedic Dog Bed

Does your canine best friend have arthritis, joint problems (such as hip trouble)? Then this might be the bed for him. This dog bed is constructed with 4 inches of support foam that equally distributes your pup’s weight to decrease pressure on joints. The rim cushion is flexible and your dog can use it as a pillow.

The cover is machine washable—the manufacturer recommends removing the cover, then putting in the washer on a gentle/delicate cycle. Another great feature is the non-slip bottom, which makes sure the bed stays in place.

This dog bed is made with medium to large dogs in mind, but even several small dogs will enjoy its cozy, snuggly design.

8). PetFusion Ultimate Pet Bed

This doggie bed features 2.5-inch memory foam, ensuring your pet will enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep. This bed is recommended for dogs who suffer from joint pain, arthritis, etc.

The bed’s cover is water- and tear-resistant; you’ll also find a non-skid bottom. The easily removed cover is machine washable and you can even put it in the dryer on a gentle setting!

This pet bed comes in sizes: small, large, x-large and xx-large.

9). Memory Foam Bed Brindle Waterproof Designer

Your small pup will enjoy a cozy nap on this doggie bed. The bed features 2 inches of conforming memory foam and 2 inches of high density support foam, making it a good choice for smaller dogs suffering from painful arthritis and other conditions.

The outer cover is washable and is washer/dryer safe, while the second later is waterproof and keeps the memory foam layers dry. This bed also features a non-slip backing, which keeps the bed in place.

This is a small dog bed measuring 22”x16” and can accommodate dogs up to 35 lbs.

10). Midwest Deluxe Bolster Bed for Crates

Crates can be a great place for your pup, but the floors are usually very hard. Your fur baby deserves and needs a more comfortable option than piled blankets—he needs a bed designed specifically for crates.

The Midwest Deluxe Bolster Bed for Crates is a soft, cozy dog pet especially made for crates. The cover is made of a fleece and polyester padded cushion. The fleece helps keep your dog cool in summer, but warm in winter. The cover is easy to clean and is washer and dryer safe.

This crate doggie bed comes in the following sizes: 18-inch, 22-inch, 24-inch, 30-inch, 36-inch, 42-inch, 48-inch and 54-inch. With this wide variety of sizes, you’ll find a bed just right for your pup’s crate!

As you can see, choosing the best bed for your canine companion doesn’t need to be complicated. However, it’s best to put in the research to find the best bed to fit his specific needs. Your pup’s new bed should fit his size, sleeping position preference, and health conditions, including joint pain, etc. We hope this guide will make it easier for you to find the best dog bed for your fur baby
