Are you looking for a small dog but aren’t sure which dog breed to adopt? Then why not consider a mixed dog breed, like the Pom Shi? These are small, cute dogs that may be a good fit for you and your family.

We’ve put together some information about these dogs to help you see if the Pom Shi might be the right choice for your family. Let’s get started!

What is a Pom Shi?

The Pom Shi is an adorable hybrid mixed breed dog that’s the result of crossing a purebred Pomeranian with a purebred Shih Tzu. You may sometimes hear these dogs referred to as Shiranians, which is just as cute as the dogs themselves!

We don’t know much about the history of these dogs; however, we can learn something about them from their parents. So, in the next sections, we’ll review the Pomeranian and Shih Tzu dog breeds.

Quick Overview of the Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a small dog that originally comes from Pomerania. The dogs are the smallest of the Spitz family of dogs. They are related to Norwegian Elkhounds, the Schipperke, the Samoyed, and many others.

These small dogs were once prized by Queen Victoria and other famous people. Pomeranians are known to be highly intelligent and loyal to their families. And they’re just adorable! However, the dogs can also be quite independent and have a mind of their own. They tend to be alert and curious; sometimes, they can suffer from big dog syndrome. That means the dogs are small but believe they’re very big dogs!

The dogs come in a wide range of colors, including red, orange, white, cream, blue, brown, or black. And they have a thick, double coat with a beautiful rough around the neck. These dogs look a little like small lions.

The Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is a dog breed that comes from China and are thought to have been around for the last 8,000 years. That’s amazing! The dogs are thought to have been developed by Tibetan monks and then given as gifts to the royals in China. From that time to now, the Shih Tzu has been a wonderful companion dog.

There’s no question that Shih Tzus are noble, beautiful small dogs. They’re very friendly and as adorable as a Pomeranian. They have long, flowing hair that goes to the ground; some pet parents even put a topknot on the dog’s head for a more elegant appearance.

These small dogs have a wonderful personality and were bred to be companion dogs. They’ve never been used for hunting, herding, or other work. They love to see new people and meet with family and friends. There’s no stranger for a Shih Tzu.

The dogs are great for anyone living in an apartment and also make wonderful family companions. They do well with kids and get along with other pets.

With parents like these, how could a Pom Shi go wrong?

Pom Shis usually stand between 7 to 12 inches tall and weigh between 4 to 16 lbs. They have a life expectancy of 12 to 16 years.

Pom Shi Temperament

The Pom Shi is a friendly and playful mixed dog breed. They’re small and can easily fit in your lap! They have moderate energy, so they like to snuggle and rest after some exercise. Even so, the dogs love to go on walks and play. And they’re very trainable and enjoy learning new tricks.

The Pom Shi can be a little stubborn—this comes from their Shih Tzu parent. However, they’re still usually very trainable and enjoy being with you!

Are Pom Shis Good Family Dogs?

We have to say yes! These small dogs do make great family dogs. However, they may need plenty of training and socialization because they can be stubborn and somewhat independent. But remember, these dogs are very friendly, attentive, and simply adorable!

The one downside is that the Pom Shi is a small dog and can easily get hurt if played with too roughly. For this reason, they’re best suited to older kids who are taught how to safely play with these small dogs.

Do Pom Shis Get Along with Other Dogs?

When it comes to other dogs, the Pom Shi can get along with them. However, it’s best to introduce them slowly and in a calm manner. It can help if the dog has been socialized from a young age, too. They do best with other dogs and pets they’ve been raised with.

Food Requirements

The Pom Shi needs a well-balanced diet that provides them with plenty of protein. Some dogs may eat up to 2 cups of food a day. However, the amount of food a dog eats should be based on his age, size, and activity level.

If you’re not sure how much to feed your Pom Shi, it’s best to ask your vet for guidance.

Exercise Requirements

The Pom Shi needs about a 30-minute walk each day. They also love to play in the backyard or at the park. And they love attention, so be sure to spend some time playing with your fur baby.

Pom Shi Health

The Pom Shi hybrid dog breed is usually a healthy dog; however, they can develop some conditions they inherit from their parents, including:

Care

The Pom Shi have coats that are a mix of their Pomeranian and Shih Tzu parents. That means they usually sport long coats; the good news is that they don’t shed much! However, it’s best to brush their coats every day to keep them free of mats and snarls.

When it comes to bathing, these dogs should only be bathed when it’s really necessary. Bathing a Pom Shi too often could strip natural oils from the skin and hair, making the dogs prone to skin conditions and allergies.

Summing It Up

So, there you have it! The Pom Shi is an adorable small hybrid dog that’s a beautiful mix of the Pomeranian and Shih Tzu. The Pom Shi has a loving personality and makes a great family companion.

We’re pretty sure if you adopt a Pom Shi, you’ll be in for years of cuteness and love from your small fur baby!
