So, let’s get started with our list of dogs that look like Rottweilers! But first, let’s take a quick look at some of the Rottweiler’s characteristics.

Rottweiler Characteristics

Why take a look at the Rottie’s characteristics first? If you’d like to find a dog that resembles a Rottweiler, you may want to also see if you can find a dog breed that has some of the same attributes as these beautiful dogs.

Rottweilers were first developed in Germany where they were used as by butchers. They had the dogs pull small carts of meat around town. In addition, the dogs were also used as herders to drive cattle to market.

Rotties also have a phenomenal reputation for being great watchdogs. Some German merchants would tie their purses, filled with valuables, around their Rottweiler’s neck. The dog would then keep it safe. Who, in their right mind, would mess with a Rottweiler to steal a purse of valuables?

Rotties are large dogs that usually weigh between 85 to 130 lbs and stand between 22 to  27 inches tall. These dogs have a life expectancy between 9 to 10 years.

Rottweilers look very intimidating and are highly intelligent. They’re also very alert, watchful, and strong dogs.

The dogs have a specific color pattern; their bodies are usually all black, with tan markings on the face, chest, and lower legs. They also have a broad head with a short muzzle, and triangular-shaped ears.

So, these are the basic characteristics of the Rottweiler! Now, we’re ready to get on with our list of dog breeds that look like a Rottie!

Our List of Dogs That Look Like Rottweilers

These are the dog breeds we’ve chosen that have similar characteristics of the Rottweiler. However, some of these dogs are smaller than a Rottie!

1. Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman is another dog that originally came from Germany. They are muscular, athletic dogs that are eager to please and easy to train. They are highly protective and make wonderful guard dogs.

Dobermans have similar black and tan markings as the Rottweiler and are larger dogs. Dobermans usually weigh between 75 to 100 lbs and stand between 24 to 28 inches tall. They have a life expectancy between 10 to 12 years.

2. Miniature Pinscher

The Miniature Pinscher is another dog that originally came from Germany. They have similar black and tan markings as the Rottie. However, these dogs are a bit thinner and smaller than Rottweilers. Some people even say the Miniature Pinscher looks like a cross between the Rottie and a Doberman! However, these are purebred dogs.

These dogs are also highly protective and make great watchdogs. They’re full of energy and are highly intelligent. They’re also easy to train.

Miniature Pinschers stand between 10 to 12 inches (compared to the 24 to 24 inches of the Rottie) and weigh between 10 to 15 lbs. So, if you’re looking for a smaller dog that resembles a Rottweiler, the Miniature Pinscher may be the perfect dog for your family! They have a life expectancy between 12 to 15 years.

3. The Beauceron

The Beauceron is another dog breed that resembles a Rottweiler with black and tan markings. The dogs originally come from France, where they were used as herding dogs. These are large dogs that were first developed in the 1500s. As a herding dog, the Beauceron is highly intelligent, independent, and stubborn. They are also highly protective of their families. For these reasons, it’s imperative that these dogs are properly trained and socialized from a young age.

An interesting note about these dogs is that they are slow to mature! They are puppies until they’re about three years old. Because these dogs have a strong prey drive, they’re not recommended for families who have cats and small pets. However, if the dog has been trained and socialized, then raised with a cat, it’s possible the Beauceron will accept the cat.

These dogs have a ton of energy and need plenty of daily exercise! Beaucerons usually stand between 24-27 inches tall and weigh between 65 to 85 lbs. They have a life expectancy between 10-12 years.

4. English Toy Terrier

If you’re looking for a smaller dog that looks like a Rottie, then you may want to consider the English Toy Terrier. These dogs also resemble a Doberman Pinscher and have similar black and tan markings as the Rottie.

These small dogs are highly intelligent and have tons of energy. English Toy Terriers also are known for being extremely courageous. These dogs can be wary of strangers; however, they are loving and affectionate with their families. However, they’re not recommended for families that have young kids. That’s because the dogs are small and can easily be injured.

English Toy Terriers stand between 10 to 12 inches and weigh between 6 to 8 lbs. They have a life expectancy between 10 to 13 years.

5. Jagdterrier

The final dog breed on our list of dogs that resemble a Rottweiler is the Jadgterrier. These dogs have similar black and tan markings of the Rottie. And they have a tremendous reputation of being courageous, reliable, sociable, and trainable.
