We’ve put together a list of dog breeds that look similar to Collies! We’ll discuss the characteristics of each dog breed, too. But first, let’s take a look at Collies!

What is a Collie?

Why do we need to take a look at the Collie first? It’s important to know about the dogs’ characteristics and personalities. That way, you’ll better understand what a Collie is and choose a dog that’s like a Collie!

Not many people know there are two types of Collies, and each is a separate breed. The first is the Rough Collie (they look like Lassie), and the other is the Smooth Collie, which has shorter fur. These two dog breeds are similar to one another, except for the length of their coats.

Collies are loyal, loving dogs that are highly intelligent. They’re also great with kids and make wonderful family companions. These dogs also originally come from Scotland, where they were bred to herd cattle. Today, however, Collies have become beloved family companions.

The dogs are known for being highly sensitive and have the ability to sense when something’s wrong. They also tend to be very heroic, brave dogs that love people. Collies are also gentle and playful dogs.

Collies are medium-sized dogs that usually weigh between 50 to 70 lbs and stand between 22 to 26 inches tall. They have a life expectancy of 10 to 14 years.

OK, now we’re ready to move on to our list of dog breeds that resemble Collies!

Dog Breeds That Look Like Collies

1. Border Collie

Border Collies look something like a Rough Collie, but their fur is black with white markings on the face, chest, legs, and the tip of their tails. Border Collies’ fur coats are about the same length as the Rough Collies and should be brushed at least 2-3 times a week. It’s true these dogs can come in other colors, but they’re usually black and white.

Border Collies are highly intelligent dogs that are filled to overflowing with energy! They do well with older kids and need to be supervised around other dogs. The dogs are eager to please and easy to train. However, they need a ton of daily exercise to get rid of excess energy. These dogs do best with active families that have the time to spend having fun with their Border Collie.

Border Collies usually stand between 18 to 22 inches and weigh between 30 to 45 lbs. They have a life expectancy between 10 to 12+ years.

2. Scotch Collie

The Scotch Collie strongly resembles the Rough Collie and is sometimes called the “Old-Time Scotch Collie.” That’s because the dogs are the original Rough Collie, as they looked over 200 years ago.

Scotch Collies are known for having a sweet disposition, being people-oriented, highly intelligent, and sensitive dogs. They are also famous for their thinking and problem-solving abilities. These dogs have finely tuned instincts when it comes to herding and hunting.

The Scotch Collie is easily adapted to living in the country or the city. However, it’s essential to ensure they have plenty of exercise every day. And because the dogs love humans, expect your Scotch Collie to want to be near you most of the time. They can develop separation anxiety when left alone for long periods.

These dogs are usually a little smaller than the Rough Collie and tend to have large round eyes compared to the almond eyes of the Rough Collie.

The dogs are also very obedient and love their families. They make wonderful playmates for kids.

3. Shetland Sheepdog

If you’d like to have a dog that looks like a Collie but is smaller, you may want to consider the Shetland Sheepdog, also called a “Sheltie.” These dogs are similar to Collies in many ways. They were originally bred to herd cattle, and they’re very eager to please. As you may have guessed, they’re also easy to train!

Shelties have long fur that must be brushed almost every day, and they require plenty of daily exercise. These dogs also love kids, just like their Collie cousins!

Shetland Sheepdogs come in a variety of colors and are known for being highly intelligent, sensitive, and affectionate.

These dogs usually stand between 12 to 15 inches tall and weigh between 14 to 20 lbs. They have a life expectancy of 12 to 13 years.

4. Keeshond

The Keeshond is a medium-sized dog with many of the Collie’s traits. These dogs were originally bred in Holland and were meant to be companions and watchdogs. The dogs have long gray, black, and cream fur with large, plumed tails.

Because these dogs have so much fur, they’re best suited to cooler climates. They love spending time outside when the weather is nice and cool. However, these dogs should never be left outside for long periods. They long to be with their humans and can develop separation anxiety when left along for long periods.

In addition, the Keeshond, like the Collie, loves kids and makes a wonderful playmate for them! And they get along well with other dogs and pets. However, Keeshonds should never be left unattended with kids, other dogs or pets.

Keeshonds usually stand between 1 ft 4 in to 1 ft 7 in and weigh between 35 to 45 lbs. They have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Summing It Up

So, there you have it! These are some dog breeds that a similar to Rough Collies and Smooth Collies, especially in their personalities. We tried to include both larger and smaller dogs, too!

We hope you find a great dog breed on this list! But no matter which one you choose, we’re pretty sure you’ll have a highly intelligent, sensitive, beautiful family companion for years to come!
