Our List of Dog Breeds that Look Like Sheep and Lambs

Here’s our list of dog breeds that look similar to sheep and lambs!

1. Puli

The first dog on our list is the Puli. The Puli is an ancient dog breed that goes back about 2,000 years or more. These dogs are also called Hungarian Puli or Hungarian Water Dogs. They were used developed to herd sheep and still perform this job for Hungarian shepherds today.

Pulis are known to be confident dogs that are highly intelligent. They’re very sensitive to their pet parents and families, too. Many of the dogs also serve as babysitters for their families. What’s more, the dogs are also very sensitive to the elderly and even the sick. They make wonderful therapy dogs for this reason. While they are affectionate with their families, Puli are usually wary of strangers.

These dogs can be strong-willed and independent, too. That’s not surprising when you consider the job they perform shepherding sheep. They have a strong instinct to be protective and keep the herd moving together. Some pet parents say their Puli try to tell them when it’s time to go to bed, keep the kids together, and more!

These beautiful dogs have a distinctive coat that grows in long cords. Their fur comes in black, rusty black, gray, and white. With fur like this, it’s no wonder the dogs resemble the sheep and lambs they protect! This thick fur protects the dog and keeps it warm when working in the mountainous regions of Hungary.

2. Komondor

The Komondor is next on our list of dogs that look like sheep and lambs. However, they’re also described as looking something like mops! The Komondor is another dog breed that comes from Hungary, where the dogs were developed to protect and herd flocks of sheep. It’s thought the dogs were first developed in the 1500s; however, there’s some evidence suggesting this dog breed is older than that.

The Komondor has white, corded coats that are somewhat like the coat of the Puli. These white dogs were meant to look like sheep and lambs. Their coats made them blend in and not stand out to predators, giving the dogs the element of surprise.

These dogs are known for having a larger personality and for being highly intelligent, independent, and protective. They bring all of these traits to bear on their families, too. The Komondor tends to sit and guard their family members every day. No matter what you’re doing, your fur baby will be nearby watching over you to ensure you’re safe!

What’s more, these dogs will protect you and your loved ones if an intruder enters your home. They’re wary of strangers and will become fiercely protective if they perceive a threat.

While Komondors do make wonderful family companions, they need a pet parent who can establish themselves as the head of the pack. Otherwise, the dog will gladly take this position within the family. These dogs are not recommended for inexperienced pet parents for this reason. Komondors should also be properly trained and socialized from a young age to ensure they know how to behave in a wide range of situations.

In addition, Komondors don’t always do well with other dogs. They can become aggressive with dogs they don’t know. So, it’s recommended that the Komondor be the only dog in the home. But the dogs can get along well with cats and livestock.

Komondors are beautiful dogs, but their coats do take quite a bit of work. They don’t need to be brushed; however, the dogs’ fur must be kept clean and free of parasites.

This is a beautiful dog breed that looks like a sheep. The dogs are best for experienced pet parents and for families where they are the only dog.

3. Bedlington Terrier

The Bedlington Terrier is the next dog on our list of dog breeds that look like sheep and lambs. When you see one of these dogs, you will believe he’s sheep or lamb. The dogs originally came from England and are all terrier. That means these dogs are curious, highly intelligent, alert, and aggressive toward small animals.

This is a dog that loves to be part of all family activities. And he loves to be the center of attention. These dogs can be quite the silly clowns at times! What’s more, pet parents of Bedlington Terriers say their dogs have the unique ability to know when a person is not to be trusted. For this reason, they can make wonderful watchdogs.

Bedlington Terriers need plenty of exercise. The dogs have a ton of energy and love to go for walks, play games of fetch, jog, and more. The dogs also make great playmates for kids; however, they’re best with older kids who know how to treat dogs properly.

These dogs can get along with other dogs; however, they do best when raised together with other dogs in the family. This is a dog that also wants to be top dog in the house. They will fight when aroused, too. The dogs may also not get along with dogs of the same sex.

The Bedlington Terrier is a highly intelligent dog that is somewhat easy to train. They do best when the pet parent makes a game out of training sessions. And the dogs respond best to positive reinforcement training methods that are accompanied by plenty of praise and treats.

4. Bouvier Des Flandres

The last dog on our list of dog breeds that look like sheep and lambs is the Bouvier des Flandres.  This dog breed originally came from Flandres, where they were used to herd cattle. These dogs were also used for other work on the farm, such as guarding cattle, pulling carts, and more.

Bouvier des Flandres do strongly resemble sheep and lambs with their shaggy coats! These dogs make great family companions and want to be with their humans most of the time. As with other herding dogs, Bouvier de Flandres are highly intelligent dogs known for being quite easy-going and calm.

However, these dogs do have a tendency to herd whoever is around them. The dogs may try to herd members of the family, bikes passing by outside, and more. They are very protective of their families, too, and will fiercely defend them from perceived dangers. However, they are not known to be otherwise be aggressive dogs.

What’s surprising is that these large dogs can comfortably live in small apartments or condos. However, they must receive plenty of exercise in that case. The dogs are also quick when it comes to training sessions, though they can be a little stubborn at times.

Summing It Up

So, there you have it! This is our list of dogs that look like sheep and lambs! Most of these dogs are used for herding flocks, so it’s no wonder they look like sheep. Each of these dogs breeds can make a wonderful family companion with their high intelligence and unique appearance!
