Have you heard of the Doberdane dog breed? Are you looking for a large dog breed but haven’t found the right dog yet? If so, then you have come to the right place!

We’ve put together some information about the Doberdane that may help determine if this could be the right dog for you and your family. Let’s get started!

What is a Doberdane?

The Doberdane is a hybrid dog that’s a cross between a purebred Great Dane and a purebred Doberman! You may have guessed that the Doberdane is a large dog, and you’re correct. These dogs are large, noble, and muscular.

No one’s sure when these dogs were first developed; however, it’s though the hybrid Doberdane is a relatively new crossbreed. They are believed to have been developed within the last ten years or so.

While we don’t know much about the origin of the Doberdane, we have quite a bit of information about the dog’s purebred parents!

The Great Dane is the largest dog in the world, and this breed has ancient roots! Images of dogs resembling Great Danes date back to 3000 BC, 2000 BC, and 1121 BC in Egypt, Babylon, Tibet, and China! The dogs were originally bred to hunt wild boars, so you know Great Danes have to be courageous and strong.

While they were bred to be hunters, Great Danes are no longer ferocious, as they were when hunting boars. Today these dogs are the gentlest of dogs, who get along with almost all other dogs, humans, and animals.

Having said that, a Great Dane’s size is enough to scare someone! And they have a bark that matches their size. A Great Dane is a sleek, athletic dog that looks very elegant and regal. They have a large head that’s long and narrow, with long, graceful necks. Some pet parents have their Great Dane’s ears cropped; however, this practice is banned in some places.

Great Danes are huge and can be like a bull in a china shop; however, they’re also sweet and loving. They love to play and love kids. Even so, it’s best that Great Danes are trained and socialized from a young age. They also benefit from obedience training classes.

Thankfully these giant dogs are eager to please and want to be with humans. They need a lot of attention from their pet parents. Don’t be surprised if your giant fur baby wants to lay in your lap! Great Danes don’t really know how big they are!

What about the Doberdane’s Doberman parents? The Doberman Pinscher originally came from Germany, where the dogs were developed in the late 19th century. They were bred by a tax collector named Louis Dobermann, who needed a dog to guard his money against bandits in the area. He began breeding dogs with the goal of creating a loyal companion that was also a protector. The result was the Doberman Pinscher.

These days, the Doberman is still fierce yet can also make wonderful family companions. The dogs are highly intelligent, alert, and loyal. They’re also amazing watchdogs. While the dogs can be aggressive and vicious, they’re usually gentle, watchful protectors. They prefer to be with their families and will protect them to the death if needed. These dogs want nothing more than to be with their families.

While Dobermans are great dogs, they’re not right for all pet parents. Dobermans need plenty of exercise. They have a ton of energy and need a lot of exercise every day. The dogs also need a lot of mental stimulation to keep them from becoming bored. Dobermans also need a strong pack leader (the pet parent) who takes time to train and socialize the dogs.

Even so, Dobermans that are properly trained and socialized can make wonderful family companions!

So, now you have some idea about the purebred parents of the Doberdane! Let’s learn even more about these amazing dogs!

Doberdane Appearance

Doberdanes are beautiful dogs that are extremely impressive. These hybrid dogs have ears that hand down near their face; however, some pet parents have the ears cropped, so they stand erect.

The dogs have brown, circular eyes that sit deep within the skull and are widely spaced. The Doberdane’s head is fairly small when compared to their body size. However, the dogs have a wide, deep chest and an abdominal tuck up. Doberdanes also have sturdy bones and long, strong legs.

The coat of the Doberdane is straight, soft, and shiny. The accepted colors for this hybrid dog breed include black, brown, red, fawn, and blue.

Doberdanes usually stand between 30 to 35 inches and weigh between 95 and 140 lbs. These are large, impressive, strong dogs!

Doberdane Personality & Temperament

What are the Doberdane’s personality and temperament like? These dogs tend to be protective and devoted. They’re extremely loyal to their pet parents and form very close bonds with them. Doberdanes also show lots of affection to their families and are usually very gentle, especially considering their large size.

However, Doberdanes are wary of strangers and are not very welcoming. For this reason, the dogs must be properly trained and socialized from puppyhood to keep them from being hostile with guests who visit their homes.

While Doberdanes make great family companions, they’re not recommended for households with young children. The dogs are large and may accidentally cause injuries when playing with small children. They can also be in a home with other dogs that are about the same size. And they must be introduced and socialized with other dogs from a young age to ensure they get along with other canines.

Care of a Doberdane

There’s no question that Doberdanes are large dogs. Many people assume because the dogs are so large, they do need to eat more than other dog breeds. A Doberdane may need up to four cups of food every day. In addition, they require high-quality dog food that’s formulated for large, active dog breeds.

It’s also essential to look for dog food that offers joint support. That’s because Doberdanes can grow fast and are prone to joint injuries. Food that supports their joints with the proper nutrition is best for Doberdanes.

And remember to give your large Doberdane plenty of fresh water throughout the day, too!

Grooming

Doberdanes don’t require a large amount of grooming. You can brush them about once a week to keep their fur free of debris and dirt.

Be sure to check the dog’s ears regularly, too. When it comes to bathing, these dogs only need a bath once a month or if they become dirty and stinky. In between bathes, you can use doggie wipes to keep them clean.

In addition, Doberdanes can be droolers, so you may want to keep a dry cloth nearby. The dog’s face should also be cleaned daily to avoid the problems that drooling can cause. Skin that’s often moist is more prone to skin irritation and skin infections.

Exercise

Doberdanes are very active dogs and need at least about 75 minutes of exercise a day, though more is better. This exercise time can be divided between three short walks during the day, playtime, time at the park, and more.

These dogs also require plenty of mental stimulation, so you may want to give your dog puzzles and interactive dog toys.

Dogs that don’t get enough exercise can have too much pent-up energy and become bored easily. A bored dog, especially one that’s extremely intelligent like the Doberdane, will come up with his own ideas on how to relieve his boredom.

We’re very sure you won’t want to come home to find that your dog has chewed up everything in sight! These dogs may also dig and become non-stop barkers if they don’t receive enough exercise every day.

Training

Doberdanes are very intelligent dogs that need plenty of training and socialization. They easily and quickly learn new things and usually do very well at obedience training. However, these dogs are not usually easy to train. So, these dogs are not recommended for first-time pet parents. The dogs need pet parents who understand how to train and manage these types of canines.

In addition, Doberdanes require consistent training and socialization all through their lives. Doberdanes need lifelong training to keep them well-adjusted and happy dogs.

Socializing

Doberdanes also require socialization all through their lives. Some people are confused as to what socialization is. This is a process that helps teach a dog how to behave with various people, animals, and other dogs. The dog learns how to be confident and know what to do in a wide range of situations and environments.

Puppies usually start the socialization process when they’re about three months old; however, this process can continue all through a dog’s life.

Dogs who have gone through the socialization process are better behaved, relaxed and safer to be around. They tend not to be aggressive due to fear.

If you’re not sure how to socialize your dog, it’s possible to hire a professional dog behaviorist or work with a professional dog trainer. There are even puppy socialization classes, where young dogs can learn basic obedience skills and socialization at the same time.

Health Issues

As with other hybrid dogs, Doberdanes can develop some of the same health issues as their purebred parents. While Great Danes do tend to have shorter lives, Doberdanes are a stronger, sturdier breed that’s much healthier than the Great Dane or the Doberman. However, they can develop the following health issues:

Doberdanes have a life expectancy between 9 to 12 years.

One of the best things you can do to keep your Doberdane healthy is to schedule regular checkups with the vet. Checkups allow the vet to find health issues early, before they become more serious. The earlier a health issue is diagnosed and treated, the easier it is to cure. In addition, it’s a good idea to make sure your dog gets all of his required vaccinations.

If you’re worried that your Doberdane could develop serious health issues, you may want to consider purchasing pet health insurance. Pet health insurance policies can cover everything from regular checkups, vaccinations, emergencies, and more. If your dog does develop a serious health problem, you can rest assured that you’ll have financial assistance from your pet health insurance policy.

Where to Find a Doberdane?

Doberdanes are a fairly new hybrid mix, so it may be difficult to find reputable breeders. However, we strongly recommend adopting your Doberdane only from a reputable breeder. Dogs from backyard breeders or puppy mills usually have many health and behavior issues.

What’s more, a reputable breeder works with the dogs when they’re puppies. They ensure the dogs start training and socialization during puppyhood. That means the dogs are better behaved and do well around other dogs, humans, and pets.

If you don’t want to adopt from a breeder, then you may want to consider adopting your DoberDane from a shelter or rescue.

How Much Do Doberdanes Cost?

The price of a Doberdane depends on where you adopt him from. For instance, if you choose to adopt from a reputable breeder, Doberdanes can cost between $1000 to $2000.

On the other hand, adopting a Doberdane from a shelter may run between $100 to $300.

In addition, dogs adopted from cities are usually more expensive, while dogs adopted from smaller towns and rural areas are usually cheaper.

Summing It Up

Doberdanes can be wonderful family companions. They make great watchdogs and yet are loving with their pet parents and family. However, these are large dogs that need plenty of space. Doberdanes are best-suited for pet parents who have a large home and a large, fenced backyard.

These dogs are also sometimes used as therapy dogs, which tells you how loving and caring they can be!

We hope this article has helped you learn more about Doberdanes and whether they’re the right dog for you and your family!
